    Is there an Iran thread?

Interesting convulsions going on there. Not being an expert, anyone got any good insights or links?

I've not found anything yet but the hands of Trump and Saudi look firmly involved as Israel seems to not want to get involved.

Some interesting background from the TUC. It's always a mistake to see these things entirely in terms of the geopolitical interests of outside powers. Actual humans are involved.

That seems entirely possible and true, it's very similar to Turkey but slightly more extreme. Thanks for sharing.

They don't matter as much as whether Jeremy Corbyn should or shouldn't be saying something, apparently.

I think it might also explain the ambivalent mainstream reporting so far – it seems less sure and less well connected to the protests than in previous periods of demonstrations. A lack of contacts among organised labour being a feature of media coverage everywhere over the past couple of decades.

Are there any miners to interview, or is that just in the US?

Astonishingly, in news that will rock many people's worlds, people in industries other than mining join trade unions.

My understanding at the moment is that these protests are almost all driven by economic plight rather than as overtly political objections. I think that makes it harder to crack down on them for the Iranian authorities.

One thing I've read a couple of times is the suggestion that they were either started by hard-liners in the regime, or at least have been provoked and encouraged by those people. So, despite Tubby's jokes, there may be a parallel with Trumpism, that reactionary hard-liners are taking advantage of genuine economic grievance to take a (stronger) grip on power.

Juan Cole’s latest post touches on both of those issues, and is perhaps best summarised as “it’s complicated”

As a rule, I follow Robin Yassin-Kassab on the twitters.

For a half-decent western eye, this from the tedious Paul Mason isn't bad.

The discussion of veils reminds me of something that I read (maybe on OTF) that it tends to be imposed not only on misogynistic grounds but also on class grounds, to justify surveillance on the poor and marginalized. I could well imagine how Kurdish women would resist the veil on those grounds (it symbolizes the occupation of their land by a foreign theocracy dominated by Persian Shiites (Kurds being Sunni)).

The question then becomes whether they can form gender and class alliances across ethnic and sectarian boundaries or if the Iranian government would have popular support for an ethnic crackdown and massive oppression of the Kurds.

It would be a valid reason to have sanctions, as opposed to the spurious neocon ones.

I believe that there is ample evidence that the "morality police" are used as a tool of repression of the poorer and otherwise marginalised sectors of society (as is also the case in Saudi Arabia).

There appears to be significant support among progressive and feminist elements in Teheran, but that is to be expected. The question is whether this can serve as something around which to catalyse the widespread dissatisfaction with the regime.

The Internet is down and massacres are allegedly taking place. The last time this happened about 1,500 people were murdered by the state with others executed later.

The protests seem to be building and involving more and more people -especially women. I don;t know how much I'm getting an optimistic view from my social media bubble and how widespread this is, and to what extent the regime is acting. Any reliable sources that would give me a clearer view?

It is very difficult to get a handle on, though I have heard several interviews with Iranians who suggest that this may be different.

I have found Juan Cole to be a good aggregator of sources, as in his latest piece.

I am currently both inspired by the women in Iran and very fearful for them: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-63188795

It feels like there's either going to be a successful revolution or a very brutal crackdown.

The great Ali Daei has had his passport confiscated after speaking out. Other former footballers apparently facing prosecution include Ali Karimi and Hossein Mahini.

Also worth noting that the majority of refugees crossing the channel come from IRan
