tartan: decent site, but too complicated. Imagine I am a novice (no, on computers). I can do the fruity share sites etc, and if someone can redirect me to a torrent site, I could cope with that, but a software torrent site, please.

Orisinal has incredibly beautiful but usually somewhat somewhat shallow games. Kongregate is your best bet for full-on, legal, free games. Desktop Tower Defence is possibly the world's most powerful time sink.
