Surely the minute silence was always on Remembrance Sunday, for the Remembrance part. It never happened on armistice day until silence-inflation started.

According to Wiki, it was moved from Armistice Day to Sunday in 1939 so as not to interfere with war production. I don't recall it ever being observed on Armistice Day when I was at school.

Here in Canada the minute's silence has always been 11/11/11, whatever day of the week that falls on. It's also public holiday (unless it's on weekend, like today, when the following Monday is the holiday.)
