Why is British business so keen to stay in the single market when it runs a deficit of £96nbillion in traded goods with it? Are they masochists or just mad ?
    6:31 am - 14 Jul 2018
Yeah, proper mystery, Austin. It's almost like trade isn't a Trumpian zero sum game or something. Shall we withdraw from all trade deals where we have a deficit?

Hot take from Austin on people protesting Trump too.

      New ComRes poll:

      No deal: 39% (51% Con, 26% Lab)
      Chequers 20%

Which would appear to leave "No opinion" on 41%.

      Extension to A50: 25% (36% Lab, 16% Con)

Wasn’t Gould one of the architects of New Labour?

Or am I confusing him with someone else. (Moved to New Zealand and, er, come to think of it, died. So I must be.)

Yeah, that bloke was Philip Gould.

Bryan Gould was the guy who went (back) to NZL afterlosing to John Smith in the 1992 Labour leaxership election. He got about 9%

They called the last one with wages falling. Bad idea.

                      Another obscure PPS has resigned.

In which he asserts that Britain's EU deal was "very bad" and good for France and Germany- which is an odd reading of the economic performance of Britain and France in the EU. And that working people had their "employment prospects" messed up by Eastern European immigrants, as well as access to housing and public services, apparently. No evidence is provided for these assertions at all.

Of all the political and media actors, he hones in on "bien pensants" associated with The Guardian who want to overturn the referendum result. Brussels is "punishing" Britain, but Brexit is an "opportunity" provided "hearts and minds are big enough". Not the slightest hint of a plan.

You won't get a better example of Lexitism being the mirror image of Rees Mogg Brexit.

How much of service Neil Kinnock did marginalizing this sort of nonsense in Labour.
To be fair to him, born-and-bred Kiwi Bryan Gould reveals his motivations on several occasions: The EU was bad because it was bad for New Zealand. Preferential markets, traditional trading partners, that's all code for UnZid.

Tripartite vote - Deal v No Deal v Remain. Presumably run on French runoff basis.

That might be where he's coming from, I hadn't thought about that.

Diable, cheers. I'll go for that. But I'm not ashamed to admit it's a bit harder for the Leader of the Opposition.

I think it's a different guy who's resigned over Brexit. Scott Mann, MP for North Cornwall.

That's interesting. I put the SNP higher than that- assuming they're taking mostly Tory seats back on that model, I reckon they'll get Labour ones back too.

Could the Tories revive the Labour-SNP bogeyman in that situation? They didn't really get that going last time because they were expected to win.

Something like 60% of New Zealand's exports went to the UK on the eve of European accession in 1973. This is after 18 years of hints that the UK was looking to join the European Economic Community. Even by Empire standards, it was a remarkably dependent country.

Rogernomics was a crime, but the way NZ handled emerging from the colonial shadows from 1955 (when the UK told NZ they weren't paying a set price for NZ products, instead the market would rule) to Roger Douglas becoming Minister of Finance in 1983 was a masterclass in setting the stage for shock therapy. National and Robert Muldoon were practically the last Anglophone conservative party to embrace monetarism as well. Muldoon's final act was to refuse to devalue the New Zealand dollar (pegged at a fixed enchange rate), defying the instructions of the incoming Labour government, causing a minor constitutional crisis.

I think Hard Leave would still have a decent chance of winning that referendum, but it does offer a way out of the mess. Greening is right that there seems to be Parliamentary stalemate.

No deal ultras should push for a new referendum, they would win it easily if there is a triple choice

Michael Gove has admitted that the official leave campaign should not have stoked fears about Turkish immigration during the 2016 Brexit referendum.

In an interview included in a political book published on Thursday, the environment secretary, who was a key figure in the winning Vote Leave campaign, said that if it had been left entirely to him the leave campaign “would have [had] a slightly different feel”.

During the campaign Gove claimed that Turkey and four other countries could join the EU as soon as 2020, and their accession could lead to moving to the UK by 2030 under free movement.
You wouldn't have won without this bolllocks, Gove. You know that.
