I see the lies about Juncker have pepped the Brexiters up.

It's going to be a harder fall.

Why is going to Florence instead of the European Parliament? The Parliament can veto the Brexit deal.

Didn't the EP invitation involve a Q&A session, which would have a lot of awkward Qs and no As from May, whereas the Florence gig is just a jingoistic speech? Just guessing, mind.

You're probably right about the EP, but she could probably have wangled her way out of the Q&A.

I think this is expected to be a constructive speech. Full jingo will come at the party conference. That's another thing that will waste negotiating time.

She tried. She said she'd only do a closed session with parliamentary leaders (I assume the political groupings, but maybe the committee chairs too). EP said plenary or nothing. The point of this speech seems to be to float the idea of continued payments during a transition period as an exit bill and make it seem like a generous offer, without having anyone point out that they're separate things and that the ordinary state of affairs is for third countries to pay to access the single market.

              Ah right. Didn't know that.

Jez needs to hammer away at this scaredy cat meme. Resonated in the election.

Tim Wetherspoon has popped up again. Still not able to understand that Barnier works for member state governments, or that EU companies aren't all that reliant on British consumers.

He added that EU leaders needed to take a “wise-up pill in order to avoid causing further economic damage to struggling economies like Greece, Portugal, Spain and Italy – where youth unemployment, in particular, is at epidemic levels”.

“There seems to be little genuine appetite for a free trade deal from the Brussels bureaucracy, so EU companies are, paradoxically, reliant on the goodwill of UK consumers, who are likely to prefer tariff-free goods in the future from non-EU countries, which are generally in favour of free trade, rather than deals with companies which are subject to the diktat of those who wish to punish the UK,” said Martin.

Yeah those British punters whose wages have been stagnating, declining and generally falling behind inflation are apparently single-handedly powering the economy of an entire continent. It's a Jobs Miracle alright

Little appetite for free trade? Perhaps UK consumers would prefer to stay in the largest, richest free trade bloc in the world. Oh, right ...

These Wetherspoons rants are really something. It's literally the first thing in the company's trading update, and it goes on for nine paragraphs, not including a Spectator article included as an annex, before he deigns to talk about the company's actual financial results.

And he's bullshitting about Portugal, too.

edit - actually, er, youth unemployment is still an issue. And there's a paywall. As you were.

No doubt they'll get asked to take a further "patriotic hit" soon.

One goon on Twitter (coincidentally connected with bloody Free Schools) was opining that Britain "is always prepared to pay the price of freedom", so I'm sure it'll go well. But I don't think he was expecting to pay too much of the price himself.

Free schools, academies, Brexit. Something going on there, what with Lord Harris, Nick Timothy and Toby Young.

                              The Sun says

JAMES Dyson is a highly astute self-made billionaire who deserves better than to be belittled by know-nothing Remainer bores.
It was particularly nasty to astute billionaire Richard Branson for supporting Remain, I think.

In the meantime, billionaire James Murdoch didn't sound like he thought Brexit was likely to go be a boon for foreign investment.

Not that Branson deserves anything better than belittling either, of course.

Indeed not. But he's better than Dyson, who seems to have gone on an extended sulk because he got on the wrong end of a court decision. At least the Wetherspoon pub bore is genuine about the stuff he says.

David Davis has got that exit bill down to £60bn. Crike, they'll be hoping they get this done by the conference.

Doesn't Davis get the "exit bill" to go down each week we stay in the EU, because we're continuing to pay our part of the agreed budget?

I don't know. I assume the pensions liability goes up the longer we're in. But I expect some of the stuff we've agreed to but not paid for would get paid for out of our "transitional payments".

Boris "Kasparov" Johnson wades in. Hammond and Davis ought to walk out if May won't sack him. That couldn't be his intention, could it?!

Boris Johnson today sets out a grand vision of Britain’s “glorious” post-Brexit future as a low-tax, low regulation economy paying nothing to the EU for access to the single market.

In a 4,000-word article for the Telegraph, the Foreign Secretary restates the key demand of the Leave campaign - that £350m a week currently sent to Brussels should be redirected to fund the NHS.

He says that Britain should not continue to make payments to the EU after Brexit and that ongoing membership of the European single market and customs union would make a "complete mockery" of the referendum.

Mr Johnson, who has said virtually nothing about Brexit in the wake of the election, makes no reference to any transition period after 2019 and makes repeated reference to how EU bureaucracy is a drag on economic performance.

Apparently he criticises the number of foreigners snapping up property in London.

He's right about that. The Mayor should have done something while it was all going on.

I half worry Rees Cunt has been playing a smart game with his recent statements, cashing in on the saying the unsayable card. They all laughed at that gimlet eyed weirdo young fogey Octavian as well, probably. Then he'd have their mouths sewn up. All pious like. Like Trump, Mogg is a richer playing the rebel. When the rats flee the Boris boat then what dread uncanny vessel may they board?
