Brexit Means: Leaving Single Market, Customs Union European Court of Justice

    Credit to OP.

A Tilbury haulage owner so keen on Brexit he let Boris use his firm for his Leave campaign launch speech. He was on Today this morning complaining about the mountain of customs forms and checks that his lorries now face: "I didn't really think it through." No, you didn't did you but you're not the only one. He has come up with a good idea: he wants taxpayers to fund 24 hr customs men after estimating it may put a day of cost on all his journeys due to the huge volume of trade that will be queueing up at Tilbury docks. As someone on Twitter pointed out: you'll getting G4S but don't expect all your stuff to arrive.

No Oops from May's point of view at all. One of the better Brexit arguments was that immigration policy could be "fairer" in that the EU and rest of the world would be considered in a more similar way. White Anglophone is who they had in mind.

They didn't have India in mind.

Well, those Kipper businessmen and politicians lecturing the Germans on trade went well.

The laughter from the audience quickly turned to sniggers as they heard the UK described as "a beacon of open, free trade around the world".
When Europe was blamed for spending cuts and a lack of British health care provision, there were audible mutters of irritation from the audience.
            Plus some unsuccessful Partridge.

The occasional light-hearted attempts at EU-bashing - usually guaranteed to get a cheap laugh with some British audiences - was met with stony silence.

This looks like the right Brexit thread. Does this make sense? Seems plausible to me, if I've understood it right.

              http://mlexmarketinsight.com/editors-picks/uk-struggle-escape-eus-top-court-eyeing-deep-trade-ties

Having been an EU member state for decades, the UK is seeking a higher degree of market access than is available to Ukraine or Canada. It also wants to reproduce elements of the single-market legislation under a new comprehensive free-trade agreement.

A greater degree of market access will increase the extent to which the EU Court of Justice will want to maintain a form of oversight, said Konrad Schiemann, a British lawyer who served at the Luxembourg court from 2004 until 2012.

The remaining 27 states will likely resist a parallel court structure for the UK that allows a separate body of law to emerge that corrodes the terms of trade between them, Schiemann said. Equally, for political reasons, they can’t allow the UK to be seen to get a “better” legal deal by quitting the bloc, he said.

For these reasons, a tribunal governing EU-UK relations will be required to mirror, or seek reference to the EU Court of Justice, Schiemann said.

Nick Clegg- shit stirring, or has he had a genuine heads up here?

If it is real, it's pretty damning that nobody thought it worth leaking to Labour.

"Some people say there is no alternative, we must leave the single market, there is no remote chance we could find an accommodation with our European partners. Nonsense.

I will confirm to the House that I've recently heard on very good authority that senior German decision-makers, shortly after the prime minister [came into office] ... were keen to explore ways to deliver an emergency brake to the new UK prime minister - in return what they hoped for was an undisruptive economic Brexit.

But what did this government choose to do? It decided to spurn all friendship links with Europe, it decided to disregard the needs of Scotland, of Northern Ireland and indeed of our great capital here, London.

It decided to placate parts of the Conservative party rather than serve the long-term strategic interests of this country.

It decided to pander to the eye-popping, vitriol and bile we see every day from people like Mr Dacre, the editor of the Daily Mail, and the other members of the moneyed elite that run the Brexit right-wing press in this country.

This government has become too slavishly preoccupied with their opinions.

But above all this government has decided to disregard the hopes, the dreams and aspirations of 16.1m of our fellow citizens."
I'd have thought the line that May's just playing to the Brexit elite and Tory headbangers was worth the Opposition really getting out there. I don't know a better way of doing it than voting against Article 50, until redlines get adopted.

It's just common sense, really. The idea of a "soft" border with hard Brexit is insane. It would be the biggest smuggling zone in the world. As is the idea of setting up an entire customs/border security/visa processing infrastructure from scratch in two years.

I can see why the Irish Govt is so furious with the UK. Every time the Irish Govt says "We need to get together to organize a common front to sort out a special deal for NI." The uk govt says "It will be grand", and throws out bromides as though they were talking to their sheeplike supporters. We might be able to swing an open border for people, because we're not in schengen, but papers for dogs? And as for the customs implications?

The GDP per capita of Northern Ireland in Euros at PPS, has fallen below croatia and is heading for Romanian levels. This is going to fucking kill whatever remains of their economy. Brexit is going to break Northern Ireland.

My MP, Christina Rees, is likely to vote for, I reckon. I wish they'd selected the other leading candidate, who's (re)tweeted about a second referendum.

In one paragraph, the truth at last.

Parliament was sovereign, this is just a strop because we can't get want we want and we can't be bothered going through the paperwork.

That is it. That is why this country has committed suicide.

It should be the other fucking way around. This is why Scotland is a fucking economic toilet.

This white paper is a joke. I mean, it always was going to be, given that the government's position is a joke, but it's literally just May's speech with some extra charts and some background colour on the status quo. There's nothing new whatsoever on what they want the end game to be, or how they plan to get there. And all that is there is vague and aspirational. Or an acknowledgement of how fucked we are.
                                                For example, we
recognise the priority placed on easy access to healthcare by UK nationals living in the EU.
We are also engaging closely with EU Member States, businesses and other organisations
to ensure that we have a thorough understanding of issues concerning the status of EU
                                                nationals in the UK.
6.4 The Government would have liked to resolve this issue ahead of the formal
negotiations. And although many EU Member States favour such an agreement, this has not
                                                proven possible.

Berbaslug, those figures come from a report based on a voluntary survey filled in by Scottish businesses (response rate for the survey: 26% of the businesses contacted to be part of the sample, with huge variations across sectors.) The report includes the following warning about the reliability of the figures:
                                                    Rest of the UK estimates

Rest of the UK exports relate to trade from Scotland to England, Wales Northern Ireland or to oil and gas companies operating offshore, including in Scottish Adjacent Waters. As with international exports, it is possible that some exports to the rest of the UK are subsequently re-sold (or processed and then sold) by the initial buyer to an international destination. In such cases only the initial sale from Scotland is associated with Scotland. This is different from Scottish exports that are exported internationally via a port in the rest of the UK as these are counted as Scottish international exports.

Exports to the rest of the UK relate to trade from Scotland to either England, Wales or Northern Ireland. These estimates should be treated with some caution. It is more difficult to ascertain the final destination of sales within the UK as companies have no statutory requirement to collate financial information below UK level. Furthermore, particular sectors face challenges in determining what constitutes an ‘export’. In an intra-UK situation, this is particularly the case in the service sector where output is more difficult to quantify and the residence of the final consumer may be less clear.

In addition, users should note that in this publication and other Scottish Government statistics, figures for exports to the rest of the UK include sales of goods and services by onshore based businesses to oil and gas extraction companies operating in Scottish Adjacent Waters
Nice to see the Brexit paper treating those estimates "with some caution" [/sarcasm]
