Lot's of people would consider me one too. But it shows how stuck the BBC has become when the presenters of all the main shows old men who share opinions and incomes. David Dimbleby has a job because his father was a BBC presenter, and hosts the main TV discussion programme on the BBC whilst his younger brother (73) hosts the radio equivalent
Cripes I didn't know he had a younger brother. It really is the family firm isn't it?

He used to be the Serious Documentary guy on ITV. Leaner and hungrier, seemed wee Jonathan. Ended up doing fawning interviews with his pal Prince Charles.

it's the hereditary pricnciple in action

A reminder that Tony Blair's"reform of the House of Lords was to have an election so the herditary peers would choose which ones would represent them according to the following formula

efore the passing of the 1999 Act, the Lords approved a Standing Order stating that the remaining hereditary peers shall consist of:[1]

2 peers to be elected by the Labour hereditary peers
42 peers to be elected by the Conservative hereditary peers
3 peers to be elected by the Liberal Democrat hereditary peers
28 peers to be elected by the Crossbench hereditary peers
15 peers to be elected by the whole House

Those posiions are helf for life or until someone resigns. when there is a by-election.

Fuck this rotten corrupt Ruritania. and they call the Eu undemocratic!

Blair could have had some bland enough but more representative AV+ style PR and proper democratic reform of the Lords in his first term. If he could have been arsed. So many reasons to hate him.

I love it as somehow the perfect Blairite fix -unable or unwilling to change anything that involved power. (except the power of the Leader inthe labour party)

Saw he got a name check tonight on Newsnight in John Sweeney's report on the Caruana Galizia murder. one of the interviewees noted that he had intervened to support the Prime Minster Joseph Muscat despite the corruption charges hanging over him

              Looks like a swingers photo.

Which reminds me of this, too. Cherie and Tony did like a free holiday

Why bother walking out on the talks? It's not like there's any risk of them going anywhere while the government refuses to say what it's own position is.

What's the endgame for this pigheadedness? Davis et al I can understand, because they're monomaniacal, but surely May understands that, for instance, the EUR 20bn thing isn't an offer at all in the context of the divorce bill. At best it's a sleight of hand for domestic consumption. But what does that get you apart from a few weeks of breathing room at home? Is she literally just trying to hold on to her meagre power one day at a time? To what end, other than to have an even worse legacy than Cameron?

In the words of one Elysée adviser, the “absolute requirement” is reaching a divorce settlement before talks about post-2019 relations begin. In substance it falls well short of Britain’s initial expectations.
Why? This was the EU's position from the very beginning, and at no stage have they, or any member state, shown any sign of wavering.

Every statement, every action and every move made by the UK Government is not for the EU or the process, but for domestic consumption. I think that David Allen Green said that the Tories are not negotiating with the EU, but with their own backbenchers.

Having it all be for domestic consumption made sense before the election (or, indeed, before there was going to be an election), and to a lesser extent before the party conference, but what's the point now? It's all going to fall apart before any benefit could accrue to them. It's not like they can use their backbenchers to push other legislation through because the entire timetable is full of Brexit stuff.

They're going for this "Labour wants to pay 100bn Euros" rubbish.

Davis has sounded more concilatory today.

I'll give some credit, this seems to be a new offer. At least, it's new to me.
Let me deal with family rights, which is most difficult first. The issue is that in order to give perpetuity on family rights it would give to three million people in the UK rights that British citizens themselves don't have. I am trying to think of a way of maybe a short-term way of sorting this, a certain window whatever.
On the other hand, there's still this bizarre semantic quibbling over the extent of progress and ignoring the fact that, for instance, on the divorce bill the two sides don't even agree the basis for deciding the number, let alone the number.
The first thing I have to say is I hope they recognise there’s been significant progress. It’s not just words. Sufficient progress is their test, not our test. “Sufficient” is up to them, “significant” is not up to them. In citizens’ rights alone there has been major progress. My hope is that, whatever the criteria, whatever the process, we don’t let the process get in the way of progress. That actually we get an outcome on Friday, in the medium term, which is beneficial for everybody. That we are not left with a straight no. I also think that it’s important, in European political terms, that the Council recognises that the Prime Minister took quite a bold stance. In some sense it was a high risk stance, of putting out the Florence speech. I think the reaction was very positive. Friday should reflect that too.
What happened in Florence was the UK asking for something new, and offering something for it. It has no bearing on whether progress has been made on the existing negotiation points.

Corbyn has decided to give Brussels a lecture on neoliberalism and austerity. They're likely to ask themselves when you ponied up any money for Greek debts.

                                Master diplomat, well done there.

Corbyn's speaking at a conference on the future of socialism. Do you think that's the perfect audience for him to say that he thinks Schauble and Drax have got it spot on?

Ah, apologies, I was told he was speaking to "Brussels", not just in Brussels.

He's doing fine then. I'll leave my post up to give everyone a good laugh.

And as someone (? Faisal Islam ) recently pointed out -there's considerably more agreement between the 27 countries of the EU than the 28 members of the cabinet.

Heaven forfend that you would use this to improve the rights of British citizens. Nope. Race to the bottom it is.
