That really isn't much more than he has said already.

It's a stark and sobering read. He uses the Swiss example correctly, illustrating my country tenuous hold on economic peace and the compromises it had to make.

        Winter is coming...

          Meanwhile, in Labour-leave supporting land:

Twenty-six Labour MPs have written to Jeremy Corbyn, warning him that embracing a second Brexit referendum would be “toxic to our bedrock voters”.

MPs including Stephen Kinnock, Gloria De Piero, Sarah Champion, Jon Cruddas, Caroline Flint, Gareth Snell and Lisa Nandy sent the letter as the party’s shadow cabinet met on Wednesday to discuss Brexit policy.

The meeting comes amid expectations that the Labour leader is set to announce a modest shift towards supporting a referendum.

In the meeting, the Guardian understands MPs received a voting analysis written by party strategists.
The document said it was “not obvious, from the evidence of local elections and Peterborough, that a more ‘pro-remain’ position from Labour would in itself win back voters currently lost to the Liberal Democrats, or in a numerical enough way that would offset leave voters in many of the key marginals, that [we] have lost both recently and over the last few general elections”.

Secondly, Labour should have come out the day after the Referendum, and said that the people have spoken, but the message is profoundly unclear, and people voted for Brexit for profoundly contradictory reasons, and were offered something that is effectively impossible. Therefore, the Labour party will support whatever agreement the UK govt of any party manages to get out of the EU as long as it is put to a three way referendum, so they can vote on the reality of brexit.

Instead they demanded that the UK trigger Article 50 the day after the referendum, and effectively gave the executive a free hand in interpreting the referendum in any way they saw fit.

Labour offering to vote for the withdrawal agreement in return for a referendum might have got them somewhere when Theresa may was desperate to get her withdrawal agreement through, but that moment is long gone, and now it's going to be Boris. It would also have been a brexit position that wasn't based on delusion, dishonesty and triangulation, and it wouldn't have effectively smothered properly grounded criticism of Brexit bollocks. It is going to be too late now, and too much time has been wasted.
It never would have, case in point being when they did she spit in their face for it.

I certainly also do not recall much if any leadership by anybody post-June 2016 (the new Lib Dem Treasury spokesman was promising Magic Brexit, single market membership with no FOM) until May decided to make my blood curdle with her Tory conference speech.

The presence of Legitimate Concerns types all over the letter (the Mirror has a copy and therefore all 26) is very notable.

Other than Dennis Skinner and maybe 1-2 other people, these aren't crazy Lexiter types. Even Cruddas still pumps Blue Labour's tyres now and then.

I'd say it's due to the cunts that failed psephology 101 and think Labour voters on Leave constituencies were all Leavers. John Mann Syndrome.

That thread is in response to Simon Wren Lewis' article, and doesn't really address his substantive points. Labour is triangulating and cowardly and it's all very fucking late. As a party it's doomed in Scotland and on the verge of doing a 2007 Holyrood in the Welsh Assembly.

                                              But Everything's Fine.

If Disaster Socialism will sweep away the Disaster Capitalism of No deal is the calculation of Corbyn and McCluskey that seems very fucking stupid. Not everyone who wants a second ref or revoke is an FBPE Watsonite wank.

It is difficult to express how weak those arguments seem if you already know that chuka umuna or Tom watson are cunts. It seems to me that one of the greatest problems facing the anti brexit forces is that a lot of people on the left in the UK seem incapable of separating an idea, and whether or not it is good or bad by itself, from the identity of some of the people espousing those Ideas.

People I respect otherwise, like Owen Hatherley Joe Kennedy or even Proper Journalists like Dawn Foster, are far too forgiving of the Labour leadership.

Kind of amusing to see people who have been clamouring for Corbyn to be calling for a second referendum to suddenly say that it isn't good enough and that he should be backing Remain in a second referendum.

It's almost as if they are shifting the goalposts.
