Won't they just lose that by 11 votes?

Asking for an extension might be inevitable. I'm not sure that you can assume the exact same level of inevitability for its being agreed by the EU27.

I think they’ll want ye gone before the Euro elections. Or permanently revoking article 50. Might get a month’s extension.

I'm just putting this out there, for 2019 that is, I'm going full-on po-faced on slurs relating to mental illness and intellectual capacity.

I think Starmer will know exactly what the EU are prepared to agree to.

                          Turkeys won't vote for Christmas.

But Which version of Christmas are these Turkeys not going to vote for - The No deal Brexit which they have no confidence in, or No Confidence in the Government prepared to bring in No deal Brexit?

If they vote for a GE, they'll be automatically deselected - a cross-party agreement to extend/revoke Article 50 until an alternative deal can be signed off on is another matter, however.

I'm confused as to how the EU could have a backstop without the UK's compliance. If the UK decides post-2020 to impose import and passport controls at the NI/ROI border (unilaterally breaking its withdrawal agreement), how does the EU having a unilateral backstop prevent that?

                                    Economic war?

Yeah. If the UK breaks the backstop, then all the consequent negotiations collapse and the UK goes into default Superhard Brexit. Presumably with the addition of a really pissed off EU that deliberately scuppers the UK's trade deals with other blocs.

Plus no one would trust the UK at all to keep their side in trade deals after witnessing their behaviour toward the EU. Anyone signing owt with (hopefully r)UK would screw them even more than they would otherwise to cover the threat of perfidy.

So May is lying to Parliament by claiming the EU would be willing to negotiate on the backstop in any way?

Yep. Unless the EU is lying to Ireland, the substance is not up for negotiation.

Look at these No Deal academic goons.

"British universities are the strongest and most attractive in Europe. With a clean sovereign Brexit, British universities get the best of both worlds. They escape the European commission’s shackles imposed through the withdrawal agreement and, like other successful third-party countries (Israel, Norway and Switzerland, for example), can participate in EU programmes like Horizon 2020 at will"

Switzerland was excluded from Horizon 2020 after its referendum against freedom of movement.
