At a distance the closest I get to a vox populi on this issue is by reading football forums. Overall most writers are in tune with opinions here, but a large minority — pro-Brexit — are buying Tessa's speech hook line and sinker. The EU are the bullies. If anything bad happens — which it won't because... well... we're British after all — but if it does then it has to be the EU's fault. Particularly all those unelected bureaucrats in Brussels who're trembling in their Gucci's because Britain is about to show other European countries the way forward!
That's very interesting AdC. There seem to be three strands of anti-European feeling on the forum I read sometimes--the relatively articulate right wing who think the EU is "an un-elected faceless bureaucracy leeching money from the UK to increase others standard of living and decreasing ours" who take that position, former Labour voters I guess who are struggling with a world where the working class have been ignored a, and then the hard right/fascist who are also trying to post about Muslim paedophiles at every opportunity. It's not a club with a big fascist base, and in a remain area. They ran a poll which split 75 out 70 in, exactly mirroring the UK divide. Would be a good place to do some research

Brexit: Phillip Hammond says he will fight an EU swoop on City of London trade

The Chancellor has opened up a new front in the Brexit war with Brussels by warning Britain will fight a swoop on a lucrative trade in the City of London.

Philip Hammond claimed a plan to curb London’s dominance in clearing euro-denominated transactions risked economic growth and stability across the entire continent.

“London is the world’s number one financial centre with high standards of financial supervision, including longstanding cooperation with EU institutions,” he said.

“This benefits the entire continent. We trust everyone in the negotiations will see the value in not undermining that.”

The EU’s proposals – in documents seen by The Independent yesterday – are widely seen as an attempt to force UK clearing houses to move across the Channel or submit to regulation from Brussels.

If successfully, they would deal a sharp blow to the City’s status as a global financial hub, as Brexit gets underway
They don't have to cause any instability. They can pick it off at their leisure.

I like the way that phillip hammond is presenting the inevitable and completely foreseeable consequences of leaving the Single Market as an attack by the EU on the UK. that's not going to make negotiations harder at all.

It's what happens when the deal is nothing at all or a shit sandwich, that's the worry. All the projected rage as it becomes apparent even the nest eggy middle classes won't make it out alive. They'll soon come to mourn the hollowed out social democratic safety net they just wished away. But nobody's fault but everyone else, they didn't vote to be humiliated by our enemies finally showing their true colours. A mob, lashing out, that knows at heart it's done it to itself, fuckin dangerous.

Kenny Farquharson is betting the house on May getting something close to a decent Brexit (so killing nationalism in Scotland stone dead, again). Fuckin delusional.

Hammond couldn't even fight of an unholy alliance of the Daily Mail and John McDonnell on NI changes. I don't give him much chance against EU27.

Soft Brexit would catch a few Scottish nationalists out. Unfortunately, she doesn't seem to have any interest in that.

                    What's going on here?

Government prepared to walk away from Brexit talks if bad deal on table - report
The Government could publish its contingency plans for leaving the European Union without a trade deal in a bid to show Brussels it is prepared to walk away from Brexit talks.

According to The Sun, the move would be an effort to convince EU bosses that Britain will not agree to a deal if it felt the terms on offer were not advantageous.

It would involve publishing the plans drawn up by government departments at the request of the head of the civil service earlier this year.

“I understand that not only has the Cabinet Secretary Jeremy Heywood told every Government department to prepare for a no-deal scenario, but the Government is also considering publishing it,” wrote the paper’s columnist James Forsyth.

“They hope that by setting out their plan, they would show the rest of the EU that Britain really was prepared to walk away rather than sign up to a bad deal.”

Mrs May has repeatedly insisted that she is prepared for Brexit to take place without future trade terms - insisting "no deal is better than a bad deal".

The Sun’s report comes after a week of rows between the Prime Minister and Brussels, beginning with a leaked account of a meeting between her and Jean-Claude Juncker which suggested the European Commission president was shocked by Mrs May’s understanding of the EU position.

That was followed by Mrs May accusing Brussels of attempting to “interfere” in the UK’s general election in a statement outside Downing Street.
Is Jeremy Haywood or somebody else being very cunning here?

"Tell you what, Prime Minister, why don't you publish a plan to show there's no problem with having no deal?"

                          Let's role play this.

May: I insist on dealing with the 27 member states directly.
Barnier: No. It's against EU law and the principles to which the 27 member states signed up.
                          May: But I insist.
                          Barnier. That's nice.

                          Your turn, Daniel.

Gisela Stuart is clearing off from Parliament so nobody can hold her responsible for the mess. But she leaves us with this example of the vacuousness and wishful thinking that's helped get us where we are.

                                  https://www.politicshome.com/news/europe/eu-policy-agenda/brexit/house/house-magazine/85640/gisela-stuart-labour-party-has-take

We should now fight for a new category of ‘Right to Remain’ for EU citizens, with a simplified administrative procedure and the charge capped to the cost of a passport.
That''s what's already being said by the government. It's been rejected. What do we do now?

She doesn't say. Never mind, she's got philosophy on her side.

Immigration policy perfectly demonstrates the dilemma. Remaining a member of the single market and retaining free movement of people means an immigration system based on geography not merit or economic need. The prime minister talks about ‘tens of thousands’. But shouldn’t we start with broad principles? The longer Labour avoids the issue the more of a problem it will become.
The whole package we have serves economic need. The broad principle is that it's not separable. So what's the solution?

Just as the country will have to engage in a debate of national renewal to define its priorities as the next parliament votes on which EU laws to enshrine in UK law and which ones to change, so the Labour Party has to take a hard look at its policies.

It has to do that to inspire voters in the general election. But Labour also has to have a voice in the national debate which will shape the country for a generation. This will also guide decisions when it comes to votes in parliament on what to oppose and what to support.

Our parliamentary democracy doesn’t find it easy to implement the outcome of referendums. Labour should embrace the 2017 election as an opportunity to re-set the political landscape. One that moves beyond what side of the referendum anyone was on. All the legislation in the next parliament should be seen as part of a national renewal.
That's it? The solution is to have a debate? Weren't you supposed to have thought this out already?

And the EU says, sorry, you don't get to pick out just the bits you like. And I don't think they'll change their mind because it's "national renewal".

Thanks, Gisela. You won't be missed.

Jesus Christ, we're a month-and-a-half through the process and they're still trying to quibble over the sequencing of talks. Which might have been OK, if they weren't also purporting to be able to conclude a comprehensive trade agreement in the remaining time.

                                            From GY's Link

Britain wants a free-trade agreement with the EU “covering all products and all services,” Davis said, adding that Britain will keep open the option of walking away from talks if the deal that’s offered isn’t good enough.

“We argue a bad deal could be significantly worse than no deal,” he said.

Holy shit. After all this time a British cabinet minister is still talking about having a free trade deal that covers all goods and services, while not being subject to the ECJ. That's just not on the cards. Nothing even close is on the cards. No ECJ and no freedom of movement, then no free trade.

And as for no deal being better than a bad deal, what does David Davies think will be the likely response of the EU to the UK walking away from their bill? Sanctions is such an ugly word, but a trade war with the EU, and exclusion from the WTO is not better than a bad deal.
