For a left government that intended to bring public utilities and other privatized industries back into public ownership to strengthen investment, improve services, and meet social aims, these state aid rules would prove major obstacles, especially in view of the entrenched neoliberal outlook of EU institutions and their probable hostile reactions.

Today's solution to the NI border problem.
A 10 mile buffer zone.

Slightly less dumb version leaked to CityAM, but it's still pie in the sky.Proponents of this idea of this special economic zone suggested it was virtually identical to existing standards and would not result in the feared border down the Irish sea. The freedom of movement red line will remain intact as long as the UK does not impose visas for EU27 citizens and the Republic does not enter the EU's Schengen Zone.

Left against Brexit
"“There is nothing about Brexit that will make life better for the working class,” [manuel] Cortes said [from the TSSA]. “It was a rightwing brainchild won – and only narrowly – on a deceitful programme of dog-whistle racism and the big lie that the NHS would get £350m a week- The left should unite now and come together to stop this Tory act of war against our class. Our job is always to defend our people against the boss class. Supporting Tory/Ukip Brexit is unacceptable class collaboration. Full stop.”
Cortes said the time was right for Labour to reconsider its message on Brexit. He called for the party to “come clean with the electorate [to] say the Brexit squeeze ain’t worth the juice”.

Not to mention that the inhabitants of the Buffer Zone would presumably become stateless.

Fair play to Manuel Cortes as a rail union leader for being anti-Brexit. The leaderships of the RMT and ASLEF are Lexiters and crank out stuff like this.

It is hoped that the option ultimately presented will have moved on enough from the options ruled out by Brussels “to allow Barnier to say we are not quite happy, but it’s enough to move onto talks”.

It's been their approach all along. Try to come up with some form of words that they can interpret one way and Europe can interpret another, all in the hope of getting to FTA talks before the EU wants, so that the magical free trade agreement can wash away all the inconsistencies and impossibilities in their position.

BTW it's really easy to see that that Jacobin article was written by a Greek. Looking up the author's bio, he's a former Syriza MP, who joined that other party, when Syriza agreed to the second bailout. TBH that article makes more sense if you view it as a defence of parts of the status quo in Greece, than a coherent plan for the UK. I suspect he's maybe just a little ahead of the Curve, because leaving the single market and the customs union is going to make the UK a lot more like Greece than you'd think.

Yeah, it basically seems to be a strategy of procrastination while they a) make shit up as they go along, and b) cling on to power for as long as possible, so I'm not sure they care how the EU feels about it as long as it delays having to face up to reality. Obviously this can only continue for so long. The most favourable read is that they still have a hopelessly misguided opinion of the strength of the UK's negotiating position, so they think they can bully the EU into a framework at the last minute. Because otherwise it's almost treasonously cynical.
