    Meanwhile in Brussels

[barnier] is clear Britain would have “no institutional rights, no presence in the institutions” and “no voting rights” under his plan, meaning the UK would end up following rules made in the interests of the remaining member states and even incorporating them into British law with no control of how they are formed.

I was reading the first bit of tony Connelly's book about brexit, and the irish govt started their brexit planning in 2013, and when it happened had plans in place for when they were going to issue various press releases and statements six months before the referendum. Our govt was working on ensuring that if the UK left the eu, there would be no hard border from about the point that Cameron started talking about a referendum. this is why when the EU agreed a common negotiating platform fairly soon after the referendum the Irish border was in there as one of the three things to be sorted out first.

The really irritating thing from our point of view is the way that outraged Brexiteers are telling us that the nature of the border between Ireland and the UK is an internal UK matter and who the hell are we to interfere. That's an insane way to think, because by definition there are two countries involved when you are talking about a border. The other thing is that the UK has accepted that the republic has some role in the governance of Northern Ireland since the fucking anglo irish agreement. There's also the good friday agreement, that we wrote into our constitution in a fucking referendum. There are a lot of Brexiteers (particularly Michael Gove) who think that the GFA was a shameful defeat for the UK govt and the concept of Britishness.

it's very unfortunate from the point of view of achieving a settlement that the DUP are using this as an opportunity to use brexit to try and break the good friday agreement. I like the way that arlene foster has written to all the EU govt as though a) she is first minister b) as though she is the sole voice of Northern ireland and c) and as though Northern ireland voted overwhelmingly to leave the union. When A) she is not the first minister, and seems to be in a lot of trouble at the RHI enquiry b) she is only the leader of one political party in Northern ireland, and the only one to support brexit and c) only 60% of her community voted for brexit, while six out of seven nationalists voted for remain.

It's not just irritating from your point of view.

Imagine having to live on the same island as the people who want to take us back to the 1890s.

To be fair, he lives on the same island as people who would be happy going back to the 1690s.

David Cameron's part in Britain's downfall

It shows that many of the Brexit attitudes were already there in the Cameron government. The demand for special treatment, the readiness to use workers from the EU to steal a march on Germany in the beginning, and wanting to turn the tap off when they felt like it.

            And the empty threats...

all on the other side of the table knew full well that leaving the EU would not address our concerns: it would merely leave us without any voice within the EU to prevent our interests being overridden.

Pulling out of the EPP was the start of the slide. All to pick up Euphobe support for his leadership bid.

Barry Gardiner says still possible to stay in the EEA and Customs Union. He's changed his tune. Promising.

Not possible to shorten this annoyingly long thread title to maybe 'The Brexit Thread' is it?

Repurposing the OP as the thread title would still pretty much cover it.

Interesting dynamic here. The Mail on Sunday supported Remain, and trusts that its readers don't like Putin, which might be a stretch.

I could have sworn you were going to link Putin to Jamie Oliver.

Are The Mail on Sunday and The Daily Mail two completely different papers then?

Different editors. Like the Brit Times and Sunday Times. According to Private Eye the MoS editor (Reid?) absolutely despises Dacre.

Close. He's an Old Etonian, former editor of Tatler, who looks like a bad drawing of Nicholas Witchell. Seen here with Fraser Fraser:

Grieg isn't very Scottish. Grandfather was born in Scotland, but went to Eton and lived in London and has been dead 60 odd years. His father was born in London.

But he may own Scottish land.
