    What are *these*?

I mean the asterisks around the word. I am no great punctuation expert and meander between "these" and 'these' inexpertly and have only come against *these* on message boards.

    What do they mean?

They're used in place of these.

Because sometimes italics either aren't usable (on some messageboards) or they simply disappear when being used as part of a quote in a reply.

I don't understand the programming side of messageboards in the slightest, so I'm not sure why it happens - only that it does.

We're quite blessed, here on otf, in some ways.

They're also used to indicate actions. For example, *sigh*.

i've been loving and possibly overdoing the tags on this board recently.

i am not apologetic, because i think it's great. i just wish there was a strikethrough tag (for sarcastic use).

                    Yeah, strikethrough is great.

When I use asterisks it's always to indicate an action rather than for emphasis.

BoD: it is. I don't think Fowler's has ruled on this yet.
