I mean the asterisks around the word. I am no great punctuation expert and meander between "these" and 'these' inexpertly and have only come against *these* on message boards.
What do they mean?

Because sometimes italics either aren't usable (on some messageboards) or they simply disappear when being used as part of a quote in a reply.
I don't understand the programming side of messageboards in the slightest, so I'm not sure why it happens - only that it does.
We're quite blessed, here on otf, in some ways.

They're also used to indicate actions. For example, *sigh*.

What are *these*?
i've been
loving
and possibly
overdoing
the tags on this board recently.
i am
not
apologetic, because i think it's great. i just wish there was a strikethrough tag (for sarcastic use).

What are *these*?
Yeah, strikethrough is great.
When I use asterisks it's always to indicate an action rather than for emphasis.
