So, Trump's people were talking about killing the US ambassador to Ukraine. That's a bit naughty, isn't it?

Where do we cover what's going on in Virginia?

It's very naughty, though this guy is incredibly stupid and unreliable even by TrumpWorld standards.

DR mentioned the ERA aspect on the "Someone has to do it" thread, but I haven't thought to mention all of the gun theatre on the "Well Regulated Militia" thread.

And those of course don't exhaust Virginia politics.

It has also emerged that Hyde was sectioned after an incident at a Trump prprty in which he claimed to be persecuted by the Secret Service and is still subject to a restraining order related to his stalking of a GOP consultant.

        Only the best people, indeed.

Is anyone here going to watch the trial? It's too much of a circus for my taste and the outcome is unlikely to damage Trump in the election as far as I can tell. His representatives will know how to deflect and run down the clock, then the vote itself will be portrayed ludicrously as a win. Having Roberts there means that the SCOTUS is being asked to preside over a fiasco that demeans the institutions of state. Roberts gets a spotlight but it can't do him any good to have this in his legacy.

Good point. I was thinking of the
Virginia governor declares state of emergency ahead of gun rights rally
            stuff.

(I can't leave headlines in title case even when quoting, sorry)

Speaking of, how has Giuliani not been disbarred yet?

I serve on the board of a pro bono organisation that is affiliated with the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, and we were actually discussing this the other day,

The consensus seemed to be that New York is very tolerant of misconduct other than stealing clients' money, and particularly wary of being perceived as "political". It was widely thought that (like so many things here) the outcome would be very different if the polity in question was the City, rather than the State.

I was going to ask you what the consequences of this are, but then I saw your last time.

No hope of Mick Mulvaney being hauled over the coals in court for breaking the law as head of the OMB?

                      Not under Bill Barr's DOJ.

Though the question of what happens in a future administration becomes more and more complex every day. There are an awful lot of crimes here.

Can Trump not just issue a ton of pardons?

                        Comment

He could, and I presume that he will, but there is so much illegality that it would be genuinely difficult for him to cover all of it, even if that was his goal.

The pardon power is vast, but one still needs to identify individuals and specific issues (if not individual crimes)

I know I express caution about throwing the word 'fascist' around but I think Pompeo comes close, allied to his desire for The Rapture. On a continuum, he's closer to Third Reich than the liberal democracy we thought the US represented (at least domestically) from say 1919 to around 2016 (allowing for gender and racial exclusions that never went away).

                                                Comment

To me the word fascist has some ideological overtones that I don't really connect to Trump and his toadies. Fascists are also venal authoritarians and that's the clear common ground. They're fascist light, maybe. If it were 1930 they might see going whole hog fascist as the best way to lock in their power, but in 2020 it makes more sense to just cheat and steal while persuading half of the country that you're polite company, for as long as you can get away with it.
