It doesn't seem like a big deal. It helps blue dog/centrist Democrats define themselves as "reasonable" by being opposed to AOC. It helps leftish Democrats like AOC who have no meaningful Republican opponents prevent any insurgency against them and also helps them get their agenda in the public eye.

Pelosi has called the tweet 'xenophobic', which is problematic. The targets are not foreigners, although the term xenophobia can be used for treating US-born people as foreigners, which is probably what she means. But it is mainly problematic because she has used it to dodge the proper word - racism. Trump's tweet can only be read as you're only American if you're white.

Do you really think it’s good that Fox is repeating Pelosi’s slurs?

It also shows further that Birtherism was a fake concern because we now know that Trump thinks being born here is immaterial to whether you belong here or should be allowed to serve in any of the three strands of power: executive (Obama), judiciary ("Mexican" judge), legislature.Last edited by Satchmo Distel; 16-07-2019, 13:41.

Despite having come to expect the worst from the Republicans, even I was a little taken aback by the comment from Pence's chief of staff yesterday that Trump couldn't possibly have made a racist tweet because Trump wasn't racist and we know Trump's not racist because he has one Chinese American who happens to be married to the Senate Majority leader, running one department in his administration.

I dunno.
Given the current political math in Congress, it seems quite a reasonable thing for the House to do.
A key element in the Democrats winning 40 seats in the midterms was their success in peeling off Trump voters (primarily suburban women) who may have benefited from the tax cuts but are troubled by the racism, misogyny and cruelty.
Of course this is red meat for his base, but he can't win with just his base.

He's focusing on getting his vote out rather than the middle ground because that worked in 2016. But AOC would help get the Dems many of the Greens voters from that year as well as some women and male persons of color who are experiencing buyers' remorse.
My worry is that the incumbent in recent elections has tended to get votes just for being the incumbent no matter whom the fuck he is.
Also, how are relations between AOC and the Dem nominee going to play out?Last edited by Satchmo Distel; 17-07-2019, 13:42.
