It starts in the lead up to Reagan and Thatcher. It becomes sufficiently clear to the wealthy elite in the US and UK that economically they were so far ahead of the USSR, that they can simply just focus on looting everything. Everything since then can be seen as a transfer from the many to the few.

They also realised that effective control of major political parties could be obtained at extremely reasonable prices

There's also the confluence of the inflation of asset prices benefiting both baby boomer property owners and the 1%.

Definitely true in the UK where even the type of White people who wouldn't look out of place in a Jeremy Kyle audience go along with it.

Alabama hasn't read the script about not attacking Roe v Wade directly so we are now likely to have a SCOTUS confrontation, it seems

I thought the point was precisely to attack Roe v Wade directly, now that Kavanaugh is on board.

But the counter-argument is that the GOP needs this as a button issue in future elections.

Who needs abortion when you can be openly racist again?

I would think this is the first time in over 40 years they think they can take a pitch at Roe. They were never going to blink given the opportunity (reflected by the fact that several states moved in this direction and they voted in favor of a more ghastly "clean bill" to go straight at the Supreme Court)

The Orange One will visit Ireland during his European tour next month.

I'm with Satchmo in my surprise. I thought the goal was to slowly remove all the protections of Roe, but to do it piecemeal. You'd have bullshit requirements on abortion providers to reduce the access to an absolute minimum. But actually overturning Roe would both heavily motivate all those women who know they've needed abortions in their lives to vote against the maniacs, but also lose the main thing that drives the religious out to vote. Trump only got a bunch of votes last time around because he was going to nominate anti-Roe judges. Next time around, if Roe is overturned, why would they come out for him. It's much safer to slowly remove access (particularly for the poor and minorities - kids of Congressmen can always fly to California or Ireland for more modern treatment) than to create the potential firestorm that comes from moving back to the dark ages.

Fuck sake (on the Trump Ireland visit). Hope he gets the same sort of welcoming ctte at Doonbeg as he got at Turnberry. Fucker adds bugger all to the local economy anyways.

In his inimitable way, Guy started a new thread on this, so the discussion is now going on in two places.

Trump is not an Alabama state legislator.

This is arguably the most dangerous consequence of the Trump presidency so far if it succeeds because thousands of women will die from unsafe abortions and many of those who don't will raise kids traumatized by abuse or place them in care to be abused.

How many other convicted felons get a full page in a national newspaper to validate their crimes? Can you spell "remorse" Conrad? It's F-U-C-K Y-O-U -!

Meantime - if they tariff the remaining $300 billion (as proposed), this trade war with China is going to get seriously ugly very quick.

It's almost as if carnage and disruption are part of Trump's goal.

The tariffs one is real strange. It is really screwing his base, yet there is a clear angle (which currently seems to prevail) that the pain will be worth it for long-term victory. That plus a lot of people don't seem to understand what a tariff is.
