    That's the problem with norms.

There was certainly talk at the time that Ford was acting corruptly, but that has faded with time. I think an important factor there was that the "Nixon was railroaded" crowd was down to the single digits nationally and virtually extinct in Congress. I'm not at all confident that we will ever reach that level of consensus in the current situation.

Ursus, my understanding of 1975 is that there was a mood of "we need to move on" that the Democrats were happy to collude in, partly I think because there was a deep economic crisis that had to be the focus on the 76 Election. There was a degree of consensus in the mid-70s that could not happen with the current POTUS. I think the best hope for a new consensus post-Trump would be another economic collapse for which Trump could be blamed by both sides (with convenient amnesia by the GOP for supporting the policies that caused the collapse).

That certainly was the majority position (and one not very different from that after Bush vs. Gore), but it wasn't the only view being expressed, particularly by the "McGovern Wing" of the party. Of course, the 72 result had marginalised those voices considerably.

GOP amnesia is going to be a defining characteristic of any endgame. They have no choice.

Yes, she decided that a good bit of the sentence be concurrent.

I wonder if she though that she made a pardon less likely by doing so. He's still going to be in until he is 85.

I misremembered his age, but the maximum reduction for "good time" in the federal system is 54 days a year (15%). So, at least 75.

What about the $25 million in reinbursements? (That isn't the correct word.)

Is the indictment in NY so that he will still be held in jail even if/when he is pardoned? Seth Abramson seems to think so.

Huh. Never knew all these white collar crimes had degrees.

The indictment in New York is because he committed a bunch of state crimes.

It does have the effect of putting at legal jeopardy even if he is pardoned (because the President can only issue pardons for federal offences), but I would counsel against anyone thinking that this is purely some kind of "Resistance" stunt designed only to frustrate a pardon. As I've been saying for some time, a good number of Administration figures are looking at a host of possible state prosecutions because they love to commit crimes.

GY, for white collar crimes, the degrees usually relate to the number of instances and the total amount at issue.

They will be throwing things admittedly but you can't have everything. I think the irish govt should show trump footage of Reagan's visit to Ireland. I think that would probably put him off.
