At this point in the Presidency, what kind of person do you need to be to a) attend a Trump rally b) laugh along with him and c) stand there behind him doing it for all to see? If indeed there were a wall, I know exactly who I'd want to see up against it one day. And I know who'd be first.

Bruno, I think that there is a kernel of truth in your observation, but that there are also important differences with DC prep "culture" and its equivalents elsewhere.
The privilege and access to power that those schools trade on allow them and their students to get away with things that wouldn't be possible elsewhere. Not just the money that allows for "Beach Week" to be a seemingly universal experience, but also the knowledge that they will be largely immune to scrutiny from school or town authorities, supported to the hilt by enabling parents should that zone of impunity somehow break down and always able to trade on the networks of connections that are the schools' prime selling point.
And just as it isn't all high schools, it isn't just the 70s and 80s.

They are horrible people. I don’t care how nice they are to their loved ones and neighbors or their minority help. They are despicable people. They are fascists, no hyperbole is needed now. You turn up at such a rally you are a worthless bastard.

Kavanaugh's testimony did display comfort with outright lying. He could have said, "yes, as 17 year olds we wrote immature sexual innuendo in a school yearbook. I am sorry."
Instead he came up with a ridiculous story about how their yearbook was actually praising the virtues of the girl in question and how dare the committee drag her into it.
He has really been exposed for being a lying piece of shit. In which case, he can't be any kind of judge, let alone a SCOTUS one.

Kavanaugh chose to go with a defence along the lines of, "I am a tremendous person, believe me. I never got drunk. I was too busy studying and playing sports. The best sports. The best grades."
He only had to impress Trump. As long as he did that, the Republican party would roll in behind him.
They need to change SCOTUS confirmations to a 2/3s majority. Ok, so then you won't get any Ginsburgs, but you won't get any Kavanaughs either. It would be a court full of Garlands.

And changing it to 2/3 would require a Constitutional amendment, which ain't going to happen.
Schumer has said that the Democrats would consider reinstating the 60 vote rule if they take control of the Senate, but I'm afraid that all that would do at this point is ensure that Democratic nominees never serve.
