Apparently, Fred Lewis Pattee, one of Penn State's most important early figures and writer of the words to the alma mater, wanted Penn State students to create a big white "S" on the side of Mount Nittany. Thankfully that never happened and the whole hill has been preserved as woods.

As that list indicates, many of them are maintained by high schools or colleges.
