I'm not sure, but believe that Berkeley's "Big C" was the inspiration for both the Colorado School of Mines and Brigham Young University (as seen above).

Apparently, Fred Lewis Pattee, one of Penn State's most important early figures and writer of the words to the alma mater, wanted Penn State students to create a big white "S" on the side of Mount Nittany. Thankfully that never happened and the whole hill has been preserved as woods.

The terrain and the flora, or lack thereof, lends itself to it. In the east, usually you'd have to cut down trees to create one of these.
