I'm afraid that he is like "our" president in that respect. Nothing that he could have done will change his popularity with his "base".

Who leaked the Gove story? I presume it was Johnson and his camp.

He doesn't need a large base to win the leadership.
He only needs a majority among the less than representative Tory membership.
As to the Gove story, one of the many unpleasant aspects of being sealed in a bag of snakes is that one can never be sure just which one is biting you at any given time.

Much more of a problem for Gove is that after having always been seen as the Murdoch candidate it looks as though Murdoch is backing Johnson
and yes there are some Anyone but Johnson people - but the ERG have backed him already.

So, how are the ABJ/ABB getting on, then?
The professionalism of his campaign – a far cry from his shambolic effort in the aftermath of the EU referendum in 2016 – has won him support from unexpected corners, uniting hard Brexiters such as Owen Paterson and Jacob Rees-Mogg, with moderates such as young rising star Johnny Mercer and Damian Collins, who has suggested he could support a second referendum.

It really is a collection of some of the most unpleasant people in the world
It feels like one of those Agatha Christie novels where everyone's a suspect.

Though it is a reason why he would not be keen on calling an election upon becoming PM.
Jeremy Hunt shows why people have slip of the tongue moments with him so often.
