    So, New Glasses, Then

As the thread title may have indicated, I need some new glasses. I'll also need some accompanying prescription sunglasses.

However, I'm on something of a budget and don't especially want to spend hundreds and hundreds of £££ on eyewear. Can OTFers suggest a course of action that will enable me to get some groovy glasses with the right prescription, but without forking out a ton of cash?

      So, New Glasses, Then

I'm due some new glasses, so last August I went to get my eyes checked. My eyes just couldn't concentrate, so I got a letter from the optician to give to my GP. After that I had my eyes tested at both our local specialist and the eye unit at Northwick Park. Apparently I've developed blepharitis, so I now have to use eye drops on a regular basis and have a nightly ointment to put into my eyes.

All this means that I haven't had the chance to get my eyes tested again. So I'm no fucking help, sorry...

Do you work at a computer screen for most of the day (as part of your day job, not just sat at home surfing t'interweb)?

Your company may have an Eye Care Plan which could provide free lens, and possibly free frames, although 'groovy' isn't a word that might spring to mind when you see said frames.

A lot of people like Warby Parker as they are cheap and fun, though they are more for a casual eyeglass wearer as they won't be as well fitted.

I seem to spend a fortune on glasses, partly due to their existing on the flexible (tax free) healthcare spending and being a great way to burn through the excess. That and insurance makes the lenses pretty much free.

The current rotation includes these (in different colors from shown). I do recommend going to a less chain-like store to get interesting glasses.

The best way would be to have your eyes tested, then armed with a copy of your prescription, order online. There is one website - which, frustratingly, I can't remember the name of - who will send you various pairs to try out and you can return the ones you don't like.

            It'll come to me.

Ace & Tate? Seems to be the 'lets rip off Warby Parker before they get to Europe' startup.

I've used Glasses Direct for the last few years. I get an eye test first, then order online (although some opticians seem wise to what you're up to and refuse to provide all of the information beyond the bare minimum). Not sure if they send multiple pairs though.

Getting an eye test through work is also worth doing.

I'm opposed to Warby Parker solely because of the name.

This'll generate a bit of derision, but Costco do good glasses at a great price. And the frames on the wall are the frames you get (and once they're gone, they're gone), so you don't see 500 people walking around your neighbourhood in the same frames.

WOM - hate to be the bearer of this news, but... given the other style choices you make, I doubt the lack of supply is why you don't see people walking round your neighbourhood in the same frames.

Funnily enough I went to the optician today to get an eye test and possibly new lenses. But the building in which it was supposed to be is now a construction site.

The first thing is to get the test done through an opthalmologist, not an optician. She/he is a doctor who has no interest in selling you frames. Once you have a prescription you can shop around for glasses/frames.

An optician should also be willing to fit new lenses in old frames (though they may try and discourage you.) I'm very hard on glasses and several times I've bought expensive frames that fell apart after a year or so. The last frames I bought, just over three years ago, have been brilliant so, a couple of weeks back I had my new prescription lenses fitted in them. Much less expensive and I know they'll last.

Yeah, I do exactly the same thing. Obviously get your eyes tested by a professional and ask for the prescription.

I'm sure the lenses are grinded by 9-year-old children in Indian villages, but the workmanship's pretty good.
