      Rousseff impeachment

I read that Techer is lining up the chair of Goldman Sachs in Brazil as finance minister when regime change happens. The great vampire squid clearly sees a lot more blood for its funnel to extract.

        Rousseff impeachment

The favourite for the post of Finance Minister is Henrique Meirelles, a former president of the Central Bank under Lula. Temer is meeting him today. He'll be charged with implementing a period of harsher austerity than that started under Dilma.

          Rousseff impeachment

          At last.

Eduardo Cunha, Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies and nemesis of Dilma, has been suspended from his duties by the Supreme Court following a request made in December by the Attorney General Rodrigo Janot. He alleged that Cunha was using his post to 'destroy proof, pressure witnesses, intimidate victims and obstruct investigations at any cost'.

His successor, Waldir Maranhão, is an ally of Cunha and, as a member of the Ethics Commission, has tried to limit investigations into Cunha. He is also being investigated by Operation Lava Jato.

              Rousseff impeachment

The Lower House's vote to begin impeachment proceedings against Dilma has just been annulled by the new Speaker, alleging irregularities in the vote.

It is unclear whether the Senate will agree to a new vote in the Lower House. I have no idea what happens next, nor I suspect, does anyone else at the moment.

                Rousseff impeachment

This is a real bombshell. No-one was expecting anything of this nature, least of all Dilma who has urged her supporters to act with caution.

It was difficult to imagine how the constitutional crisis could become any more intractable, but it just has.

Dilma was right to be cautious.

Maranhão has revoked yesterday's decision and the impeachment process goes ahead tomorrow. What a farce this is.

Ahead of the vote, here's some facts and figures about the Senators who will decide Dilma's fate.

                    White men: 64
                    Black men: 6
                    White women: 10
                    Black women: 1

% of Brazilians who are Black: 54%
%of Brazilians who are women: 51%

                    Average age: 60.5 years

                    Lawyers: 30%

                    Under criminal investigation: 58%

If 41 out of the 81 Senators vote in favour, Dilma will be suspended for 180 days and her Deputy Michel Temer will assume the Presidency.

                      Rousseff impeachment

The Senate vote is about to start. Each senator will have a maximum of 15 minutes when casting their vote. 68 of them have elected to speak (Romário is 11th on the list) which means that the process could take some time.

After the domestic and international reaction to the farcical scenes during the Chamber of Deputies vote, I suspect the Senators might be on their best behaviour but I wouldn't bank on it.

It's predicted that Dilma will only get about 20 votes or so against her impeachment.

                        Rousseff impeachment

Romário has just delivered his speech. He says that there's evidence of a 'crime of responsibility' and that he will vote for impeachment.

As a nod towards criticism of his decision by many erstwhile supporters, he says that he will not support any future measures which attack hard-won workers' rights. Good luck with that.

His tone is rather more measured than that of Senator Magno Malta (PR) who stated that Dilma is gangrene and needs to be amputated.

Current scoreline: 11-0 in favour of impeachment.

Nine hours on, we have heard from 20 of the 68 senators due to speak. I've had enough. The football is over and i'm going to bed.

Good God. 12 hours later and they're still going.

                            Current scoreline: 45-20-1

                            That's enough to impeach Dilma.

(The 1 who did not declare his vote was ex-President Fernando Collor who was himself impeached for corruption in 1992. He used most of his speech to declare that he was innocent then. He wasn't. Nonetheless, the good voters of Alagoas have continued to return him to office).

                            Update: 49-20-2

As well as being completely crooked, the golpistas are a bunch of self-righteous, arrogant pricks. A thoroughly disgusting and depressing spectacle.

The whole house of cards might be about to fall and there could be a second impeachment within a year.

While Lula has been under investigation under Operation Lava Jato, a recording has been released in which President Temer is heard condoning hush-money payments to Eduardo Cunha, the former vice-president who initiated the impecechment procedings against Dilma Rousseff.

In addition, Aecio Neves, the PSDB candidate defeated by Dilma in the 2014 election has been suspended from the Senate for requesting 2m Reais in bribes from a meat-packing company.

The Bovespa stock market index has fallen by 10% and the Real 8% against the dollar. The middle classes of Rio and São Paulo are banging their pots and pans in protest. This has only happened before in protests against Lula and Dilma. And against many expectations, it appears that Operation Lava Jato is not being targeted solely at Lula and the Workers Party.
