I got a chunk of cash out at the beginning of lockdown and haven't had to visit a cash machine since. I've used it once for a taxi back from hospital and a couple of times on a bus (really unhelpfully there are two local bus companies. One only accepts card payments or exact change, and one only accepts cash. If you buy a return ticket to the town centre from one company, you cannot use it with the other company on the way back, even though they go the same route. It's a total scam).

That's exactly the kind of shithousery I can get fully behind.
As for not using cash, I've probably drawn out ?20 once a month since lockdown started but that's only to cover me for the fact that the shop down the round only takes cash for transactions under ?3 and if I'm just getting a drink and packet of crisps, I'm not having to withdraw the ?2 from the post office counter.

The new ?50 note
Design's a bit meh, but I do like how it looks like it's crushing the Queen's head, Kids In The Hall style.

I described upthread how the entirety of my possession of a 50 pound note in my life was less than ten minutes. The Chief Cashier was on the wireless earlier and was asked about usage of 50 pound notes and she didn't convince. People who keep money at home and foreign tourists apparently. You'd need to be keeping a lot of money at home for having it in 50s to be space-efficient. Perhaps inflation and having a more robust and harder-to-forge note will make them more popular, but with cash being used less and less this does seem to be going against the tide somewhat.

When I worked at the cinema the only people who paid using ?50 notes were Irish Travellers and Indian families coming to Bollywood films. In both cases one person would be paying for anything up to 30 tickets so it was understandable.

From time to time I've ended up with a 500 Lei note here, which is basically 100 quid. As you can imagine it's a right pain to try and use. There's a 200 euro note too but I've never seen one.
I know the 50 euro notes do get stashed a lot by people. To the extent that it's actually the most issued note by the ECB

Back when I worked on the public counters, an Australian tourist came in with a 500 euro note, asking if we could change it for something smaller. He explained that he ordered 1000 euros in cash online from one of the banks, and they sent him two 500 euro notes!
I also had another family trying to buy one stamp for a postcard with a 500 euro note, I told them that I didn't have enough change, which was true.

I only see $100 notes in casinos and in movies with drug dealers. Occasionally someone who owes you money will give you a $100 bill that they got in a casino. If you try and spend it people usually hate you so it normally goes straight back to the bank.

Only time I ever had a ?50 note was when my foster dad's boss paid me ?100 with two of them when I did a weeks labouring for him, cash in hand, at the age of 16.
?100 for 5 days grafting (8-5) when I could get ?30 for 9 hours dossing in a Booker Cash and Carry convinced me to stay out of the building trade. The ?100 went towards a couple of new PS2 games that weekend.

Pleased to see that the link in the OP still works. You can choose the International Bank Note for 2023 (and/or try and put names to the faces, you should score one point, possibly a second, take a bow if you get three or more):
IBNS Banknote of the Year (theibns.org)

Well, the 50 rand is Mandela, obviously.
The Jamaican note is Norman Manley and Alexander Bustamante
And the Argentinian note is Ramon Carrillo and Cecilia Grierson
All just from looking at the notes. Specifically the bits where the denominated’s names are written*... I’m thinking that anyone who can read Arabic and Cyrillic would get all five, because it looks like the names are also included on those notes.
* - excepting Mandela, as telling people his name is superfluous.Last edited by Janik; 12-10-2023, 20:00.
