    Mother's Day 2016

If it's relevant (I know some people have lost their mum in the past year) what did you get your mum for Mother's Day?

Ma Thistle got a singing and dancing Mother Clanger. She likes the Clangers and likes toys she can entertain grandchildren etc with.

It's bloody early this year. Clinton's obviously feared going out of business if they held it around the more traditional March 25th, as that would clash with Easter.

      Mother's Day 2016

Mother's Day is never the same time as Easter, as the date is that of Mothering Sunday, ie the fourth Sunday of Lent.

I got my mum an e-card as she decided to go on holiday to New Zealand. I'll be doing something similar next weekend for her birthday and having a present ready for her when she gets back (Easter Monday).

Flowers and chocolates, delivered yesterday as for some reason Cumbrian florists freak out when they receive orders from people in London. Anyway, I'm led to believe they're lovely, so that's something.

Well it's not actually Mother's Day in most places, as the UK and Ireland are pretty much the only countries to celebrate it today. Most other countries do it in May.

i.e. "The only places that matter"

(and it's "Mothering Sunday" anyway. Which has been conflated into "Mothers Day")

This is indeed the most insanely early Mothers Day ever, and I'd have missed it if mrs b hadn't brought it to my attention.

Anyhow, I got mama blameless an afternoon-tea-for-two voucher for a posh restaurant in Edinburgh. I'm trusting my siblings to sort out some flowers, as they live a hell of a lot closer to her than I do.

It's the earliest for eight years - Easter 2008 was on March 23rd so Mothering Sunday was March 2nd. The earliest possible date for Mothering Sunday is March 1st but as this last happened in 1818 and won't happen again until 2285 nobody on here is likely to need to worry about it.

The laters possible date for Mothering Sunday is April 4th. This is a bit more relevant as it last happened in 1943 and will happen again in 2038. Again there was a recent occasion of the second most extreme date - Mothering Sunday was April 3rd in 2011.

Isn't Mothering Sunday to do with the church rather than any actual mothers though?

A card. I've given her two grandkids, I'm not putting myself out any further.

                        Theoretically yes, in practice no.

Well, in churches, a bit of both.

Sorry to be negative but, as this is the first Mother's Day since my mother in law died, it has been horrible for my wife. It hasn't been made better that the boy didn't get her anything. All the Facebook announcements have been torture for her and I have just sent a message to my brother who my Mum is staying with that I may not get to speak to her as I don't want to rub it in.

                            Sorry to hear that, Bored.

I wonder if I can find one of these nice cards for my mum.

I meant more if it was relevant, given that some posters have lost their mums recently.

But you make a good point.

Mrs Thistle hates the onslaught of marketing emails about treating Mum as it's a constant reminder of how her Mum is no longer around.

We've timed this badly this year. Our trip to America coincides with American mother's day so we are bracing for more commercialised Mom-centric marketing.

The mother of my children was probably the only mother to receive a Shamrock Rovers away jersey as her present (or at least she would have if Rovers had stock in any shop in greater Dublin or if they posted out their online gear promptly- instead she got a neatly coloured in 'voucher' for a Rovers jersey.) This was quite a nice touch from the 5-year-old and 7-year-old who are firmly in Daddy's Dundalk camp, but know and appreciate that Mammy and her family have incredibly bad taste in football teams.
