Is this a real, bona fide good news story?

Is it too soon to get excited about this?

Considering the amount of time Aung San Suu Kyi has spent in detention through her adult life, it's a pretty incredible turnaround.

My friend is monitoring the election there. She says:

"Just read in Irrawaddy's blog that Reuters quotes NLD central executive committee member Win Htein as saying the party is on track to win more than 70 percent of total seats based on unofficial results. Bearing in mind that 25 percent of seats are reserved for military appointees, to say Win Htein’s comments suggest a total rout of the USDP could be a late entrant in the Understatement of the Year Awards. It's wild."

    Exciting times.

Not sure the Rohingya will be celebrating so maybe not entirely good news. I don't know enough about it, and am hoping that the lack of comment from her is some sort of (despicable) electioneering on her part, and that she'll speak up soon.

Would imagine the parallel is with the 1989 Polish elections, in that with the incumbents having artifically buttressed their position, the NLD can only concentrate for now on actually winning the election, and that enfranchising the Muslims can only happen once power has been secured.

It is possible that they are fighting the winnable fights (maybe, possibly).

In answer to the original question, it surely is too soon to get excited. That will only come once she has actual power. Given that the constitution has been written pretty well specifically to bar her from having that, her claim that she will govern after the election must be taken on advisement for now.
