    Small signs of totalitarianism.

      Small signs of totalitarianism.

To get back on topic from modern architecture (not that much of that couldn't be considered a form of totalitarianism), it's an interesting fact that of the 400,000 or so recorded assaults in the UK last year, 20,000 took place against police officers, the great majority of which were cited as "violent behaviour without injury".

This either means that the police are doing a difficult job and are subject to a stunningly disproportionate risk of assault, or that you so much as mutter under your breath at a copper these days, you'll get a night in the cells and a criminal record.

I've mentioned the (soon-to-be-demolished) Darlington Town Hall in this context before.

(I don't know if the artwork outside is to be preserved though)
