    Automated translation

I use Google Translate for press releases written by Johnny Foreigner in the X11 leagues. Can usually get the gist of what's been said but I don't think the professionals have anything to worry about for quite a few years.

Here's the latest by Antonjansson, manager of BK Häcken in the Xpert Zone (original in Swedish):

    And the suite on wheels.

After three initial losses probably thought everyone including hedge themselves that it would be a terrible season in the bottom of the table for BK Hacken. But then something happened, the team won three games in a row, and although victory suite stayed there so still do not have the lossless suite ruptured. After a cross and a victory in a week so it is now up to seven matches. BK Hacken is hence fifth and the promotion spot.

Then again, it's hard not to be impressed by Microsoft's real-time voice translation. We are genuinely approaching the Babelfish.

Very impressive - even taking into account the fact that the presentation will have been prepared very carefully beforehand. The technology, if developed and implemented correctly and with the requisite amount of fine-tuning, could make a big difference to interpreting in the future.

But, as with all such developments in automated translation, making the leap from gist translation to fully-nuanced and natural (as well as error-free) translation/interpretation takes a very long time.

SAP are working on introducing machine translation and even with the tens of millions of words of texts and documentation that exist in the two source languages (German and English), it's far from a simple task to implement MT, or even to identify which types of texts are most suitable for the application of the the technology.

Human translators will be around for a while yet, but a lot of people in the industry do need to get their head around the fact that MT will become more prevalent, more important, and more accurate in the next few years.

Great one from today's automated translation of my Greek friend's latest FB status. At one point in the middle of a paragraph in Greek, he uses an English expression, but in the Greek alphabet. The software "translates" it as:
