Well done Ireland - your turn UK

Ireland has taken a big step forward in recognising trans people, and now makes the UK look sad. Thank you Ireland.

There is a petition to the UK government for us to follow suit. I'd very much appreciate it if the good people here signed and shared it.

Signed. Cameron is always keen to point out that he was the Prime Minister who introduced gay marriage, so this shouldn't be an issue to him either.

That was my reaction. Good for them though. Signed.

Slacktivism rules. I urge people to spend a few seconds on this issue.

Signed - strange that this is how I find out about it though.
Maybe not so strange that Hotmail lumps the Government with all those snake-oil vendors and other confidence tricksters. Microsoft on point there.

Signed. Took about a day for the confirmation email to come through for some reason, but signatures have increased by about a thousand in that time, which seems encouraging.

Here is what this petition is actually about, if its text is taken at face value:

"Having your gender recognised[sic] by the Gender Recognition Panel requires trans* people to go to pointless expense - whether requiring them to pay administration fees (and having to go through the lengthy and underfunded NHS gender transition system) or paying to attend a private clinic to receive the required evidence as well as paying to be seen by the panel."

It doesn't seem like a "pointless" exercise to me that one should go through some kind of medical certification to legally establish his or her sex change.

"Furthermore: no provisions are made for non-binary gender identities."

Non-binary gender identities like these, as identified and defined by this handy guide:

                      http://genderqueerid.com/gq-terms

"Crossdresser", "Demigender", "GenderFuck", GenderFluid", "Girlfag", "GuyDyke", "Pornosexual", and a few dozen others.

"Recognised" is the correct UK spelling, linus.

This isn't solely about people who are post-sex change, though, is it? It is partly about legally recognising people's gender identities before, or indeed without, that.
As for non-binary, only recognising two categories is as scientifically invalid as declaring Pi = 3 would be. It is simply not a true reflection of the world.

Scientifically, 99.9% of human beings are either male or female, this binary nature is a most basic aspect of human nature. The fragmentation to trendy subgenres like "asexual" or "genderfuck" is a modern gender political framework construct.

"Scientifically", that is a completely circular argument.

I wasn't going to bother signing, but I will now. Thanks linus.

                                Thanks everybody, I appreciate it.

I don't want to get into arguments here, but there are plenty of now discredited ideas that used to be scientific orthodoxy, and did great harm by being so.

The medical transition process in the UK is slow, tortuous and bizarre, and does not help the mental health or ability to socially function of those in it.

That would be sex, not gender. And we could debate to no end whether it indeed is, or has to be, a most basic aspect of "human nature", whatever that is.

                                    That's not even true.

Anyway, there are/have been plenty of societies which haven't had a gender binary.

It seemed reasonable-ish to me, before I had to actually do it. It's an instance where what may seem to be 'common sense' imposes a great deal on the people actually affected by it.

Only 37 states in Europe have legal gender recognition provisions in place, out of which 35 require a mental disorder diagnosis, and 23 demand sterilisation before recognizing a trans person’s gender identity.
                                        What the fuck?!
