    Darren Fletcher I salute you

After eight nights in hospital I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. How he ever even tried to play a game whilst suffering from that I will never know.

Three days after getting out of hospital I was back in with a blood sugar level of over 30 and diagnosed with stage two diabetes - apparently triggered by the steroids being used to treat the colitis.

Home tonight with all my self-stabbing equipment.

I feel very old all of a sudden.

That sounds horrible, UE. I wouldn't rule out captaining Scotland at some future point though.

I think Berbaslug had the same malaise. Nasty stuff indeed.

Best wishes for a speedy and bump-free recovery, UE.

That's shit UE, did you have to have any surgery? Fletcher was able to carry on having a football career, by basically removing a huge chunk of his colon.

                            Stay healthy UE.

I Think UC is slightly different to Crohns Nick. UC just affects the colon and rectum, and you can resolve it by removing the whole colon. But Crohns can hit you anywhere from hoop to teeth.

UE that's dead grim about the steroids. all they did for me was keep me awake for four or five days. What treatment are they planning for you? I had to have surgery, more surgery, but i'm on immunosuppresants and infleximab, which is some somewhat bizarre treatment called a biological.

Indeed, but it's all lumped under IBD and the treatments are the same. As is the pain, discomfort and embarrassment.

My sister has UC. I have have thought the title of this thread to myself many times.

My sister has long periods with no flare ups which can last for years. Able to work 40 hours in a week, cycle to work, eat delicious meals, all these things. Hopefully it will be the same for yourself. And hopefully the diabetes type2 might be a temporary reaction to the medication and not a permanent thing.

Look after yourself in any case. And remember that there are loads of people like yourself.

actually UE, I don't know what the situation is like in Australia, but in ireland everyone knows someone with crohns, indeed I'm surprised at how many people I know in my circle of friends and acquaintances actually have the damn thing. so while it may be of little consolation now, but You're far from alone.

                                              Thanks all.

It all came as a bit of a shock as they'd said before I was eventually hospitalised for a week with ever worsening symptoms that it was diverticulitis. I knew it wasn't as I have had that on and off for 10 years.

They did my blood sugars (I have never been diabetic) while I was in being diagnosed and they were fine. I was then put on a low fibre (and of course high sugar) diet and steroids to tackle the colitis.

Then I had more blood tests ordered by specialist six days later and the next day got a call from him saying go to hospital as I was on the edge of a diabetic coma.

My blood sugar level was apparently over 30. They stabilised me with some fairly hefty insulin doses and kept me in for two nights.

I came home yesterday and am now self-administering two hefty daily injections plus metaformin and my levels are a roller-coaster linked to the time I take the steroids. Anything under 20 is okay for now, apparently.

It may be that things will settle once the steroids do, but that's wait and see.

Adding to the fun is the diets for each condition are absolute opposites.

Still, I am at home and adjusting. At least one poor bugger in the ward I was in won't ever be from the sound of it.

Yeah, it's likely to be a roller coaster until they find a programme that works for you, after which you can have a more normal life back. I wish you well, but especially patience (!), while they find the optimum solution for yourself.

And as TAB says, there is literally nobody in the Irish gene pool (you have some of that?) not affected by some form of auto-immune condition. They think JFK probably had Celiac disease. He was up to his eyeballs on steroids and still became president and wooed Marylin Monroe, so there is hope.
