It's important to know that you need to use a club with less loft.

There's already some hefty flooding in AHC's neck of the woods. This is all storm surge - no serious rain or wind in these shots

              Stay safe out there.

Raining now. Power down. Flo is knocking at the door.

Looking pretty grim for the Philippines too.

Wind isn't really the issue with Hurricane Florence, it's the 15-20 inches of rain that is forecast to fall in the next 48 hours that's going to be the problem.

There was a clip from this camera that went viral of the wind tearing the flag in half. They predictably got a lot of abuse on Twitter from people furious that no one rushed out 34 miles off the coast in a hurricane to take a flag down.

'Kevin the flag' as I think it became known.

That typhoon (Mangkhut/Ompong, not sure what the dual naming is about), which is hitting the very northern end of the Philippines right now as I type, must be unimaginably violent. It's the most ferocious cyclone anywhere in the world this year. Check out the degree of it on this global wind map, compared to other cyclones:

                                Downgraded to a tropical storm:

Really good news for people on the east coast of the United States as Hurricane Florence is downgraded to a tropical storm. The winds may well weaken but it is the rainfall which is the killer. Good luck everyone and stay safe.

Ompong - local name; Mangkhut - international name. There are two different agencies that name the typhoons and the internal Philippines one has different naming customs than the one based in Hawaii.

The footage coming out of North Carolina is incredible. I hope AHC and anyone else on here who lives down there is somewhere safe and dry.

My house isn't damaged as far as I can tell but the down town area and along Front Street are a ruin. Boats in the street, overturned vehicles, trees down. Some lovely old houses, ante-bellum houses, are ruined.

I had some large tree limbs come down in my yards but they didn't hit the house although my neighbor has an entire tree down in his yard.

One of the public housing areas near the water was completely inundated.

All in all I seem to have got off fairly lightly. Some people have lost everything.

                                            More rain to come.

I'm always saddened to hear about people losing everything. It's so hard and they will have lost things that are not replaceable. I am glad that you escaped that fate yourself, AHC.

The news has been reporting nothing but "New Bern Flooding" all weekend - damned glad to hear from you and sure hope the worst is over.

Aside from the human misery, I saw something on Facebook that I hadn't considered. The Area in the path of the hurricane has a hell of a lot of industrialized Animal farms. What happens to those animals and also what happens to their gigantic lakes of shit?
