    Pornography

Seeing as I played my part in dragging the 'You can still buy that?' thread into the gutter, I thought I'd start a thread devoted to Frankie Vaughan.

I'm still not sure where I stand on porn. There's undoubtedly a lot of harmful stuff out there that is produced for misogynists and which makes teenage boys think that anything and everything is fair game. But in terms of what you might term 'safe' porn where all performers are having a fine old time, how do you feel about it?

There's always seemed to be something of the tragic and exploitative about it for me. My ex and I once had a lengthy discussions about the ins and outs of it (no pun intended) after we thought that watching some together might be good. I'm not sure we came to any conclusions but we didn't watch any.

There's always a thought in the back of my head that the girls might be doing that without any of their friends and family knowing; that when they go back to their mum and dad's for Christmas that year, they know what they've done and all they can see when they close their eyes is seven blokes pointing their attention at her. But then that viewpoint makes me feel like a prude who thinks that women aren't allowed to enjoy sex. It's a complicated arena and one that I'm certain I've not even come close to scratching the surface of in this incoherent babble.

But as I touched on in the other thread, there's so much of it out there at the moment. There are racks of magazines and hundreds of thousands of websites and DVDs.

Someone, please articulate their feelings on the subject better than me.

That's already two massive assumptions, which academics in the growing field of 'Porn Studies' are insisting need to be researched.

Not that I'm a fan/user. Faked heavy breathing and 'give it to me baby' stuff stopped doing it for me once I started, er, doing it. Maybe I haven't found the right niche.

I'm not a fan of the more explicit stuff, it just isn't sexy (Is there anyone who actually likes seeing other peoples' sex faces? Really?).

I'm much more into the tease, the suggestion, the playfulness...

If men hold the vast majority of power in society, commercial sex will be organized and sold around their desires. Libertarians will call this a "free market" but a free market just recirculates and reinforces the power that's already there.

OTOH I think the disadvantages of having no access to porn are also quite severe. Lots of teenage sex, even sexual abuse, may happen in conservative households, because if you make sexual curiousity a taboo, you unintentionally encourage it.

Porn in moderation seems to be one answer (and is how I've tried to manage my attraction to it in my own life), but if porn is addictive, it may be difficult for some males to consume it in a moderate manner. This then leads us to abstain completely, like the alcoholic who knows that just one drink will be fatal.

The only aspect of pornography - which I'll hold my hands up to (well, one of them, at a time) to enjoying, occasionally - that I don't like, is that most of the people who get rich off it are the seedy impresarios like the blokes who own West Ham, not the actual "stars".

I coincidentally read over the weekend that Jenna Jameson, probably one of the most famous porn actresses of all time, is now worth £20m in her own right, and I thought well, that's good for her. She's, erm, "earnt it".

I'm not a big fan of "producers" creaming off all the profits from any industry, though. I mean what exactly does Simon Cowell do ?

A lawyer of my acquaintance who has represented quite a few workers in this industry told me that many of the women in the films are quite well paid by the major producers. The aforementioned Ms. Jameson for instance did well and owns, or owned, her own production company. Most of the men are not well paid. Also the major producers mandate regular medical check ups.

The big problems are the "living room" producers who exploit the addicted, the homeless and the unsophisticated and enforcing copyrights so that the studios can afford to pay.

The psychological toll on the performers, especially women, was, until recently, largely unrecognized and its interesting that some former actresses now run support groups for former performers.

As for me if I'm drunk enough it can be funny but if I'm sober it bores me stiff (fnarr).

Odd fact: there is a World Gang Bang Championship held in Poland and the world record is 919 men in 24 hours held by one Lisa Sparxxx. You can get the DVD.

I will come clean. I have been in a porn film. I thought it was the most empowering thing ever.

Then I realised that some bastard put it available for others to see.

It was ok, actually. I got a few quid, and a lot to eat. (Nose-candy if you like that thing, but I really don't trust powders.)

It basically consisted of trying not to be cold whilst you are sat around chatting to your co-star (if it's a group, it's funny as fuck), and pretending to not think about whether 'this my best side?'

It was a fun day, which of course was spoiled by the Internet. Believe me, I am available there, but I have no say on the copyright. Perhaps that is the point?

I have an ex, who wanted to shoot a home-movie of us having sex, and he couldnt believe why I didnt want it. So I caved. And then he got the hump because I was doing the angles and lighting for his benefit. Twat. Or not, sorry.

Incidentally, I get residuals... and yep, that is exactly what it sounds like.

Never been into it. As suggested up thread once you start being sexually active it becomes sort of redundant. I was sexually active in my mid-teens.

Having said that I have known couples who watch it as a form of foreplay and I have a very good mate in a stable long term relationship who watches the stuff regularly. His partner is fine with it.

Side question: I often wonder how free porn sites make any money, or why pornographers post their stuff there to be used without payment. In the pre-Internet age, porn used to be very expensive, and in the early Internet age there was no such thing as R** **** and the like.

They have hosting costs, but they don't pay for content and they get money from advertising. Plus many of the operators also own other channels, which the 'tube' sites cross-promote.

I'm curious though, even though it's online, what are the chances of anyone who you'd prefer not to see it, actually seeing it?

Don't know what to make of that.

I had coffee in his favourite cafe once (Coffee, Cake and Kink, as was). I have never drunk coffee so fast in my life.
