    Malcolm Fraser

We did one for Gough Whitlam, now his great adversary has died within a year.

Arriving here as late as I did, and having read and heard so much about the Dismissal, I really only associated Fraser with his dubious role in that whole situation.

But it's clear that, for a 70s conservative leader, many of his views and policies were a lot more progressive and inclusive than (for example) the incumbent. He continued with the work Whitlam had done for Aboriginals, which in itself is a legacy.

One theory is that once leader, he was working to salve the guilt of his role in the Dismissal. With Hawke and Keating following him, Australia modernised, opened up and became more tolerant.

Arguably we've been going back the other way since.

Don't know enough to comment properly, but do know that this should not be a nil thread.
