    Boris Nemtsov assassinated

i suspect putin probably had something to do with this murder all right. but in a way, it doesn't matter whether he did or not, it works in his favour. some people will think he did it, which is terrifying. others will think he's being framed by dark forces, CIA-sponsored publications and the like. the general doubt and confusion if anything adds to the fear of one camp and the fury of the other.

i suppose there's also the alternative that a critical mass of people believe he is responsible, and revolt against the killing. but i can't think of any previous examples of something like that happening. terror-killings usually achieve the intended effect.

      The "investigation" continues.

Indeed, when investigative committee spokesman Vladimir Markin spoke to explain what leads were being followed up, he did not mention the possibility of radical nationalists or anyone linked to the government. Instead, he said the main lines of inquiry were personal issues, squabbles within the opposition, Islamic extremism or someone linked to Ukraine.

There is also confusion over how much of the incident was caught on camera. Kommersant newspaper reported that all the cameras on the bridge either had grainy footage or were turned off “for repairs” at the time of the incident. A Moscow city spokesman denied this, however, and said all the relevant video had been passed to investigators.

It's good to see that the victim's girlfriend is so keen to ensure that this killer and whoever hired him are brought to justice. I like some of the imagery in This report

Safe to say that Putin's oligarch friends and Nemtsov's oligarch friends don't get along.

What a country. You can (try to) vote for oligarch enablement through the rule of an iron first or oligarch enablement through a perverse form of ultra-neoliberalism.

It's true what you're saying even though it's not important who votes but who casts the votes.

Quick question, but what constitutes an assassination? As opposed to a killing? shit tablet keyboard, so apologies for any slepping mistakes.

In the nebulous recesses of the Russian internet, rumours circulating that Putin may be dead, though this seems to be solely based on grounds that he hasn't been seen in public since March the 5th.

See also victim of a coup, and now in exile, but the most likely of the rumours is that his girlfriend has given birth in Switzerland.

                    Premeditation, basically.

                      but why would putin care?

My money is on embarrassing plastic surgery disaster. the first 10 or 12 surgeries usually go fine, but after that there's a risk of catching wildenstein syndrome

If he turns up in a bandana like his pal Silvio, we'll know that was the issue. But don't underestimate the power of Russian sentimentality.

                          He's back.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has laughed off speculation about his health after making his first appearance in public since 5 March.

Life "would be boring without gossip", he told Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev at talks in St Petersburg.
No signs of botched plastic surgery, nor did he pass out cigars.

well we can't be sure until the next bout of propaganda photographs, which may feature him riding on a bear, while breast feeding his son, as the personification of the ying and yang of Mother russia, or something equally insane
