    Happy Hanukkah, everyone.

Apparently, it started yesterday and continues until what is commonly termed Christmas Eve. My knowledge of the festival is limited to the ceremony of lighting candles, so is there similar feasting and present-giving as in the Christian festival?

Smaller gift(s) each day of the festival, primarily to children.

Traditional foods (like latkes/potato pancakes, brisket, jelly doughnuts, etc.) rather than a single large feast.

The lighting of each evening's candle in the menorah is central to the whole thing, and the festival's prominence is largely due to its timing during the goy holiday period, rather than its religious significance (which is not great).

Full time - Maccabees 1-0 Syrians. We've got a menorah but we haven't got a clue what to do with it*. It's on the mantelpiece with a Coptic cross, a small Orthodox icon, a circular pillbox from Herat and a Congolese Luba headrest.

              1) Get eight candles.

              2) Light the first one (from the left). If it is sunset where you are, light the second one, too.

              3) Light the rest in order, each evening after sunset.

How long do you let them burn?

It has nine candle holder bits. Do you light the eight candles with the one candle that's higher than the others?

                    Yes.

If they are standard Hanukkah candles, they will burn for about half an hour.

                    Hard core suggestions here.

Interesting (to me) that they call it a Hanukkah Lamp rather than a Menorah (which is the common name here in the US).

I'm guessing that they reserve Menorah for the seven branch version that was used in the Temple.

I rarely see UA make a mistake, but you start at the right (since, apparently, hebrew is read right to left).

Actually, re-reading I see he's right after all - day 1 you put the candle in the farthest right position, then add one to its left each day.
The lighting does go from left to right when there's more than one candle.
