A bunch of ethnic Hungarians came out on to the streets of Timisoara in Romania to protest against the treatment of a local priest, Laszlo Tokes. By the time the evening fell, they had been joined by lots of Romanians, who wanted to express their dissatisfaction with how awful things were in general.

Within 9 days, Ceausescu was dead. This seems, from this distance, astonishingly fast.

Here is a short video that I had never seen before today, of the protests in Timisoara that day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KE5Yczqw1-4&feature=youtu.be

Interesting set of blogs put up by the FCO (oddly enough) from British people who witnessed the events http://blogs.fco.gov.uk/paulbrummell/
