Why were they all stood around the other day when Nick Watt of the BBC was being threatened and abused?

Dare I say for the same reason they took to the streets to protect the BUF in 1936?.

Yes, but each of those organisations will want to be sure to have a certain quantum of protection against betrayal by any of the others.

    I imagine so

what the Morgan report revealed is that there was often very little separation between the press- wouldn't separate the Times or Telegraph or Mail from the Sun or Mirror, the police, and those getting their information- and the professional criminals.

Hayman was in charge of the initial inquiry into phone hacking by the News of the World. In April 2010 The Guardian reported that he "subsequently left the police to work for News International as a columnist." He has contributed to The Times, owned by NI, and there has "written in defence of the police investigation and maintained there were 'perhaps a handful' of hacking victims."[

Hayman appeared before the Home Affairs Select Committee on 12 July 2011 when he confirmed that he had received hospitality from people he was investigating in relation to a criminal offence, although he regarded this as normal and operational matters were not discussed.[17] During this hearing, Select Committee member Lorraine Fullbrook said that the public saw him as a "dodgy geezer" for the financial and sexual allegations surrounding his resignation from the police, for his "cosying up to the executives of News International" and for "the disaster" of his enquiry into the phone hacking scandal.
They also ran many of the lies about Menezes

Hoover has been dead for decades, but the US is still dealing with the fallout of his crimes.

As you know better than most, it has been been a shit 16 years for Jean Charles de Menezes.

Dick's ability to survive massive scandals dating back at least that long is gob-smacking.

It's not that some men who are / were policemen committed domestic abuse, in and of itself bad enough

But that the Police don't investigate and act and collude to protect their own from serious allegations of abuse and assault

The original kidnappers were immigration cops and their colleagues arrived, tooled-up and mob-handed, to defend them.

BBC news just reported that Nicola Sturgeon said she was "deeply concerned" by the incident, but for some reason that only they can explain, failed to qualify that what she was actually deeply concerned about was the actions of the UK Home Office.
