In so many sickening ways this trial illuminates the issue of gun widespread ownership, and the anger so prevalent in contemporary society.
“I believe in the Second Amendment. I’m for people’s right to carry and bear arms,” he said, explaining why he was armed. “And that night was no different than any other day. It’s keys, phone, wallet, gun.”
... Says one of the victims.
Gaise Grosskreutz, 27, had gun in hand as he stepped toward Rittenhouse, who shot him the armLast edited by Amor de Cosmos; 08-11-2021, 19:26.

That's an important point.*
To some extent, the problem in the US is that tiny municipalities, run by amateurs and lunatics, have so much power over vital public functions - policing and education, most notably. And yet insofar as people engage with politics at all, they tend to focus more on state and national politics when they could have more impact locally.
*Brian Koppelman, the guy who writes Billions, made the case that somebody should remake First Blood with Michael B Jordan as John Rambo. That would really put a whole new spin on the story.

I'm guilty of it too. I do pay attention to local issues - a lot of people here do - but I tend not to be involved because I know that the meetings tend to bring out the loons (Parks & Rec was very accurate on that point) and I just don't want to deal with those people.
Here, it's not so much the right-wing loons, as the nimbies and the people who just have completely unrealistic expectations of what is possible for a small town to accomplish, especially with its zoning rules. We also have people who think no expense should be spared - especially if they think they can get the university to spend it - to reduce "traffic," and to them, any car coming down their street is "traffic."

Looks like the police getting convicted for exceeding their powers and breaking the law is now the new normal. I guess, when you put a concerted effort to hold all levels of law enforcement to account, things start to get done. there was alot of community activism taking place on this case.
