An old friend grew up in Wilmington and returns frequently to visit his mom. He was depressingly unsurprised by this.

In 2007, North Carolina's legislature declined to pay reparations to the estates of the 1898 Wilmington massacre, although the Senate expressed "profound regret."

Not be any stretch of the imagination the worst thing the US police has done and i'm sure it also has to do with my own white privilege. but there's something about the opposition between kids playing violins and the riot police which is just horrendous.

This was a feature of the Gezi protests that started in İstanbul but spread across Turkey. Many people lost the sight in one eye after being hit by projectiles fired by the police.

Of course it has been a feature of the attacks on Palestinian protesters by the Israeli army for years. Though these days they simply use live ammunition and shoot to maim

In Los Angeles, there was the famous case of Ruben Salazar, an LA Times reporter and the first major media reporter covering Chicano issues. At the Chicano Moratorium demonstration in 1970, he went into a bar to sit down and rest. A sheriff's deputy fired a tear gas canister inside the bar, aiming at Salazar's head. He was killed, and the coroner ruled his death a homicide. The officer was never charged.

Haven't watched the video, so don't know if this was covered in there, but I'll never forget the video of the NYPD officer walking up to someone and just stealing their bike for no reason other than to just fuck with them. Also the unexplained closing of subway station entrances before curfew started to make sure that people couldn't get home and therefore would be breaking curfew.
