    In further cultural philistinism, RTE is considering whether or not to axe Lyric FM, even though 2fm has served little purpose in recent decades, and Ryan Tubridy is still getting paid €495k per annum.

                This is really quite extraordinary in a modern Western democracy. I mean this kind of stuff is being cracked down on in Southern Italy these days

                    This is a consequence of the decision to push Northern Ireland a bit to the background after the St Andrews Agreement, but a major downside of David Cameron's demand that he never wanted to hear about Northern Ireland again at the start of his premiership. Essentially one of the main ways to ensure peace, was to allow gangsters, masquerading as paramilitaries to do their racketeering and drug dealing without much interference. To the extent that the UDA is the biggest organized crime group (for certain values of organized) in the UK, and the cross border smuggling scum cunts shot a garda there two years ago.

                    Whatever else happens in Northern Ireland after this nonsense blows over, the PSNI need to come down on these groups like a wrathful god. That shit has to be hammered down on. Those people are a nightmare for their own communities, and a blight on the local economies. It's hard enough to run a small shop. It's even harder if you have to make regular payment to your local scumbag. This situation here seems to be about a refusal of the new owners of the quinn group to keep making whatever payoffs the old regime had to make to the local concerned community activists, and local legitimate businessmen.

                    I came across an interesting snippet about the Oughterard Direct provision centre. This isn't the first Direct provision centre in Oughterard. Right at the start of the programme, they put a load of asylum seekers in a closed down fishing lodge, out the camp road. They had to shut it down because it was a complete disaster. They were abandoned way out in the arse end of nowhere, with nothing to do, and they were in serious danger of getting run over on their walk into town. Nothing has happened in the last 18 years to make oughterard any more suitable a place for such a thing.

                          I'm not sure which parts of Berba's unusually concise post needs explanation but here goes.

                          UDA =paramilitary cunts

                          GARDA = Irish police

                          ST ANDREWS AGREEMENT = Anglo Irish peace talks

                          OUGHTERARD = town in co Galway

                          DIRECT PROVISION = Irish government attempt to house and look after asylum seekers.

                          The main point of his post is that the Quinn group, one of the major insurance providers and a major employer in the border region, went tits up, and was bought by a multinational firm a few years ago. Last week, the chief executive of said multinational was kidnapped and very seriously assaulted by a group of masked men.

                            Paul Murphy quits Solidarity to form his own party, so the Irish left now comprises (from the centre out):

                                      RTE must have a school where rural news reporters learn how to speak in that god awful depressing way. I could have sworn that report was Pascal Sheehy but it was apparently somebody else.

                                              Heheh, from the program:

                                              • Use the Apple Tax and the hoarded wealth of the rich to fund quality public services and a socialist green transformation of the economy.
                                              • Nationalise the banking system and the core sectors of the economy currently controlled by major corporations, including construction, natural resources, the big retail chains, logistics, distribution, transport and telecommunications, and run them as part of a democratically planned economy to serve people's needs not profit
                                              Are Apple going to be privatised as well? Would be difficult to tax them so.
