The 2016 Irish election is over!
Incidentally, the Russian Airbus that crashed in Egypt was EI (Ireland) registered.
Perhaps it is time that the international authorities looked into Ireland's practice of allowing ultra low budget airlines to register their aircraft in Ireland in order to gain access to the EU market and to pay low tax.
Something tells me that the aviation authority of a small country like Ireland doesn't have the resources to police the safety of all these airlines.

The voices in Enda's head
There are periods in history where Irish public life resembles a giant open-air asylum. The spring of 1988 was one of those times, late 1994 was another. This is yet another.

Of all the new parties, they've been consistently polling the best in recent weeks. That said, when it comes to analysing the constituencies, only Creighton seems a banker to retain their seat, whereas in the former ULA, Boyd-Barrett, Coppinger and Murphy all appear safe, and likewise the SDs' three TDs should all be re-elected, even if their "national brand" has sunk without trace.

Ultra low budget airlines don't register the airplanes in ireland, because they don't own them. They lease them from companies based in ireland. There are about 20,000 large passenger jets. 8,000 of them are leased, and half of those are leased from companies based in ireland.
I don't think the irish aviation authority are responsible for 20% of the world's passenger jets.

Norwegian Air registered their intercontinental subsidiary in Ireland so that they can get around Norwegian labour laws. The Irish government has no problems with a Norwegian airline registering in Ireland so that it can fly widebody jets staffed by Thai crews paid in baht between Oslo and New York.
And, as you point out, loads of leasing companies register their aircraft in Ireland. Because it's cheap. So that they don't have to pay registration and tax fees to the more expensive countries. Personally, I like the idea of the people responsible for the air traffic control and shit like that getting their fair share of tax money, but it seems Ireland has found yet another way to facilitate the race to the bottom while charging only a very minor administrative fee.

The 2016 Irish election is over!
The Mairia Cahill Seanad nomination is currently in the process of blowing up in Labour's face. She has gone to ground and is refusing to take part in the debates prior to the election, which regardless of anything else looks awful. Meanwhile, the sister of Robert McCartney, who was murdered by Provo dissidents ten years ago, has come out and described the nomination as "an appalling abuse of the Oireachtas".

And here are David Norris and Gerry Craughwell bringing it up in the Seanad itself earlier today.

Cahill has said nothing other than that she "answered all the questions" about her RNU involvement in a dialogue with a blogger a year ago. She will get into the Seanad anyway, because of the electoral arithmetic, but the question is what happens after that. Some Shinners are saying they actually want her to get elected, because of what will follow.

The Pat Carey story is most bizarre - even while seemingly innocent, his statement that he was unaware if the investigation concerned him appears to do him more harm than good. It would appear that his inherent decency forced him to stand down while Internet innuendo was circulating, when more brazen politicians would have opted to ride the storm out in silence.

FG will allow a free vote on repealing the 8th - had they done that 2 years ago, Renua wouldn't exist and Creighton would now be a Minister. Fine Gael are on course to be the largest party, comfortably ahead on 30% in two polls this week, with SF and FF deadlocked on 20% each, while Labour will struggle to secure eight seats from 7%. In terms of the others, both AAA/PBP and the Social Democrats have made gains, to 4% and 2-3% respectively, and will be aiming for 5% each come the GE. The Greens remain constant, on 2%, but Renua are flatlining, recording 1-2% support.
