You wait months for a poll, and then you get two that are wildly out of kilter with each other:

A thread on the topic by a political analyst that may be of interest - where they most differ from the rest of the left, as noted, is on integration and immigration:

No surprise that 45% of voters earning over 80k are out and out cunts.

And that's being more than generous to the 22% of them voting FF.

              Thanks, DR, that's interesting.

A couple of quibbles with that. He defines populism very narrowly, and doesn't include economic populism. Sinn Fein are unique among major parties, in that they went into the last election offering huge tax cuts, large spending increases, and what could best be described as magic on housing. Mad bullshit that could never be implemented, but it was exactly what people wanted to hear. McCreevyism for people who didn't own their own house, and plenty for those that did. But also mad bullshit that would have shrunk the govt's share of the economy to levels that margaret thatcher would have considered extreme.

Also he accepts people's self identification as left wing as being enough to identify them as left wing, rather than whether or not they adhere to any coherent political or economic agenda. Lots of fianna fail voters pre crash would have identified themselves as left wing, even though the party was anything but.

Do you think many left self-identifying voters in any bloody country adhere to a coherent political or economic agenda?

Hard to say, but calling yourself left wing in a country as incredibly clientelist as ireland simply can't be treated the way it is being treated there. It's a funny left wing party that wants to do away with property tax, which a wealth tax that covers 90% of wealth in this country, or wants to carry on aggressively reduce the govt's share of the economy

The Green Party were the most left wing party on Dublin Council, they actually wanted to increase the property tax levy - such is the perversity of left wing politics in Ireland

Though technically, modern Sinn Féin only dates from 1970.

                              "a democratic socialist republican party"

Isn't that a bit of a weird thing to say?

Pretty much describes the Workers' Party when they were in their pomp, but hardly FF - they all like to claim the Connollyite legacy.

Particularly from a son of former European Commissioner and FF grandee Ray Mc Sharry ,as well as a former pupil of Castleknock College and estate agent. Though maybe he's had a road to Damascus moment.

I refer to my earlier comments about how an Irish person describing themselves as left wing is not to be taken at face value.

Unsurprisingly, Coveney survives (92-59), but no fewer than 13 Independents back him.

I hope that neither naomi long, or colum Eastwood get to hear how upset Mary lou is at the idea of someone deleting text messages to avoid Freedom of Information. They might both get a stroke laughing. Matt Carthy outed Simon Harris as the minister caught out leaking, with the story being recounted by miriam lord a couple of weeks back.

They would be a sixth of the dail - all clamouring for their local special interest (turf/ motorway/ state of the art hospital in the middle of nowhere)
