It is quite common for pavements/sidewalks here to cover subterranean storage spaces or passageways.

Basements frequently extend to the edge of the street.

Who would have thought an English lorry would have to go to an airport to cross the sea!

Nasty. Hope the farmer recovered fully.

"There are a number of early 19th Century disused iron ore mines in the area, making sinkholes an ever-present danger."

There are long abandoned mines all over Cumbria, the place got absolutely pillaged (and then forgotten about) back in the day.

There's a good example here of similarity in deposits between Cumbria and Cornwall. The positive legacy of the mines in that article is that the tracks built to access them now constitute one of the better constructed parts of the Cumbria Way, the negative legacy being that if you wander off track you have to be particularly careful (though due to the terrain you're not likely to be running a quad bike over them). The more accessible bits have been capped over reasonably well, but who knows what is lurking further back.

Not the most dramatic of sinkholes, but fairly local for me.

They've also closed Highway 92 Westbound to the East of 35 out of fears of another one opening up by Crystal Springs Reservoir.

I've driven over that stretch of road several times.

Not the day to visit Half Moon Bay.

Just downhill from the cemetery I put up near the start. I don't recall for sure if anyone did a closer view, but I don't think so.
Incidentally, the cemetery in question was cut off in both directions on Highway 92, but they appear to have re-opened it to the East. Possibly not for very long as it's raining here again, and supposed to get pretty stormy over the weekend.

Google Maps reminded me that I "had been here before" due to the game.

The Salinas River overflowed its banks yesterday, which means a lot of dead flat farmland that a number of us have driven through/over is under water. There continues to be a risk that the Monterrey Peninsula will be cut off (which has happened before).

Don't worry - there are only ~160k vehicles a day going down that road normally...
