    Australian Election 2013

So it's looking like Tony Abbott's "Liberals" will win easily today if all predictions are correct. Rudd's bounce was never high enough and he's now suffering partly from inertia, and partly from the divisiveness of Labor in recent years. He has been both an instigator and victim of this.

We trooped up to the school to vote earlier and once again were confronted with a ridiculous Senate ballot paper I estimate was around three feet long. The choice was, vote in one box above the line, or rank all 110 choices below the line in order of preference. After all, Shooters & Fishers and The Sex Party must have their voice.

If you only take the single-vote option, as surely the vast majority will do, your 109 preferences will be those chosen by your party of choice. Apparently a load of the micro-parties are working together to try and exploit this. To be honest I don't quite understand how but Guardian Australia have an article on it

20 Quotes From Tony Abbott to Remind You Why He Shouldn’t Be Prime Minister.

Well done Australia, you've just voted an absolute moron into office. Good luck with that.

I don't know why the scare quotes around "Liberals" - it's only the British definition of "liberal" that's somehow taken on a nice, fluffy, warm feeling that actually isn't deserved, if you go back to the original Liberal Party here. The Aussie version seems pretty similar to our Edwardian one.

It doesn't really matter, though, being shit at rugby, does it? Being too good at rugby is a bit of a warning sign with regard to the cultural orientation of a country.

ah but you don't actually have to be good at rugby to think you're good at rugby. (See Ireland)

You'd wonder why the Liberals don't merge with the Nationals when they're always in alliance. RTE presenting Abbott's victory as good for our ex-pats due to his visa policy.

Rugby's pointless. All our best thoroughbreds play League.

I did my first ever donkey vote.

In a few minutes, studio may greenlight the sequel: "Tony Toppled". Actors and audiences waiting for the decision.

Is Australia the last major democracy that restricts the leadership of the main parties to the MPs only? New Zealand's Tories still do this, but not Labour.

Abbott survives, in a Thatchery sort of way. Don't know if he will "fight on, fight to win."
