Killing people who voted for him was a gag?

      He probably thinks it’s funny.

Oh. I thought you were doing a bit.

My gag was the "old people make up 90% of Florida's population"

But my point was that it's weird given how incredibly conservative Florida's old population is (thanks to white flight) that DeSantis isn't pandering to them like crazy. It doesn't seem like good politics to piss off (or kill) your most ardent fans.

It's an extreme but real example of people voting against their own interests. They support Social Darwinism even when objectively it kills them and they find other people to blame for the deaths. Something about FL also promotes a myth of self-sufficiency ergo all state assistance is bad, even when I need it.

I am reminded that the highest point in the state of Florida is 105 metres above sea level (perhaps a bit less today).

That particular demographic is effectively willing to die to "own the libs". It is a terrifying phenomenon.

I'd vote for him, although I'm not sure he'll stand in my state.

Slightly weakened by the fact Pence served under him for four years, knowing full well who he was. It really needs Romney, or someone else unsullied by that administration, to be running these ads. I'd also expect another backflip when Trump is the nominee. Pence is not going to tell people not to vote Trump in the general.

In order for there to be any chance at all for Trump not to be the nominee, more than one of his opponents need to run ads like these (though Pence is uniquely positioned in several ways).

                          https://www.hamiltonnolan.com/p/its-...-happen-again:

The single funniest political story I have read so far this year was this Politico story detailing the pitch that Ron DeSantis’s advisors were giving to top donors on the eve of his campaign launch.
They conceded that the former president would likely not go below roughly 35 percent support in a primary but that such a floor allowed for DeSantis, his strongest rival, to take a larger share of the remaining 65 percent of the vote.

Uh, sure. That’s one way to look at it. Another way to look at it is “you are starting out 35 points in the hole.” Another way to look at it is, “ten of us will fight like dogs over two-thirds of the electorate, each huddling in our corners with a small percentage in our mouths, while Donald Trump luxuriates in a series of 35/17/17/15/9/7 victories.” DeSantis’s straight-faced pitch to donors sounds like a losing football coach telling his team at halftime, “We may be down by four touchdowns but there are potentially dozens of touchdowns left to be scored, so we are actually ahead.” If you suspected that major Ron DeSantis donors are dumb, you are onto something.
                          ....
Donald Trump’s base is a statistical minority of the Republican Party. Their inability to outmaneuver him is perhaps the first time in history that Republicans have failed to figure out a way to persecute a minority. The problem is that they are all cowards. With few exceptions, Republican politicians are barnacles who are happy to go down with the ship as long as they can continue clinging safely to its side. You will hear some of these candidates launch some attacks on Trump when they finally conclude that they have no choice. They may even say, as they have at certain opportune times before, that he is a bad, dangerous person. But when they lose to him, they will do the thing that is in their nature: They will fall in line.
I think the 35% might be generous to his opponents.

Cruelty towards those who aren't them is the single driving factor in this contest and no one can hold a candle to Trump in stoking those flames.

He didn't know what transgender was either (I recall him reading LGBT off an autocue totally clueless).

DeSantis told that fascist NCGOP gathering that he's going to restore the Confederate name of one of the forts.

I post these things purely for their humorous value after browsing Rick Wilson's Twitter.

So, admittedly it's been a while, but nothing about Robert F Kennedy Jr?

I can imagine Julian Wilson commentating on this "... and on the outside it's Christie, Trump still in first, deSantis holding strong, but here comes Kennedy..."

                                    Robert F Kennedy is a card-carrying cunt.

But, as I still don't get to vote, it's going to be 'fun'.

(Yes, and before all you buggers out there slap me for taking the piss, I am technically, not legally allowed to give money to a political party, be involved with the promotion of a political party, or indeed, work for a political party. "I can take it up the arse from a Christian without consent, but I am not allowed to speak or vote against their issues", says the latest 12 year old child in any number of 'pastoral' districts.)

Fuck Republicans. Except Lyndsey Graham. Let him wither and die on the vine.

Kennedy is in the democrat primary thread.

Though there was a good piece by Naomi Klein this week about him and how she and others would be unsurprised to see us end up with a Trump-Kennedy ticket

I think he's a genuine fascist rather than someone pretending to be, and he enjoys the cruelty.

But he's also putting stuff forward (yet again) that he knows any court will shoot down, including on conservative grounds (jus soli isn't just a liberal concept, as I understand it)

You have an impressive confidence in what the courts will rule against.
