Theresa May cuddled up to Erdoğan very quickly after the referendum result. It's government policy.

I should have posted this before but it's relevant now.

One of the most important areas of ancient civilisation is currently being destroyed. Perhaps this and the shocking state of the economy are reasons we've got a war to distract people.

Cenk Tosun is another player to appear to be pro military. He did the military salute after scoring the winner last week. He was also in that famous photo of Erdoğan, Mesut Özil and Ilkay Gündoğan but is often left out as he's not playing for Germany but chose to represent Turkey.

The EU statement did eventually go out with "condemn" in it, but there is not as yet an EU-wide arms embargo:

I traveled through the new Istanbul airport last Sunday. The news bulletins displayed mentioned 438 enemy operatives 'neutralised' in the border area.

The language of war is horrific, and in Turkish it seems worse to me. If you grow up in this discourse it's no wonder you post messages of support for the military. I struggle to see how this is going to change.

Erdoğan has said he'll never agree to a ceasefire, surely this is rhetoric as at some point he's going to have to stop.

Russia is now very active in the Kurdish region.

Comical if it weren't for the fact that civilians are being murdered due to this farce.

The second and third segments of this episode of On the Media provide very helpful background on the political and social context of Rojava's communitarian experiment, which is now gravely imperiled by the US withdrawal.

I knew that protestors were attacked, I did not know how badly. What I didn't know was that US police and officials were also attacked. Unsurprisingly Trump let them get away with it.

Because of people like Graham? IIRC it comes up every few years and is blocked every time.

My contacts in Turkey, all of whom loathe Erdogan, had been reluctantly opining that the government seemed to have been doing a reasonably good job over this pandemic. That is, until yesterday, when spurred on by weather reports that it was going to be a glorious weekend and the suspicion that everyone would come out and enjoy the weather and the parks, they announced that the restrictions that were in place were going to be ramped up for a 48 hour total lockdown (in all the major cities). Nobody out at all. This 48 hour period was going to start 2 hours after the announcement was made. Cue a mad dash by huge numbers of people to supermarkets, bakeries, tobacconists, etc Pretty much riots in some places as people fought to get in, and certainly no chance of people being 2 metres from each other. In short the 2 hour pre-lockdown managed to spread the virus like wildfire (one assumes).

That's exactly what all of friends in Turkey have said. Exactly.

Prior to this under 20s and over 60s were banned from going out and travel between cities/provinces was also banned.

Erdoğan had also appealed directly to the people to donate money to him by publishing his bank details. You honestly couldn't make this up.

Is there any likelihood of British nationals being allowed to enter Turkey this year? We still have accommodation booked in late July (booked a year ago) but no visa yet obviously. Could possibly change it to later in the year.

Money talks and Turkey is heavily reliant on tourism and the hard currency it brings, seeing as much of the summer beach tourism is at all inclusive resorts I'd say if Greece and other countries are opening up then Turkey will, especially if they can contain and restrict it.

Late July will be incredibly hot, where are you going SD?

We have now postponed by 12 months because we don't think we'd get back into the US under the Trump travel ban, and also because social distancing on an Istanbul tram seems impossible. Late July is extremely hot but we managed the same period last year by starting at 6am and having a siesta. Istanbul, Cappadocia.
