They've been backing him for a while now, that's how Turkey switched to a presidential system. Erdoğan is pursuing an extremely nationalist agenda which can be simply summed up as Ottomania, hence the fascists supporting him. He wants to restore the caliphate to Istanbul, hence the religious fanatics supporting him.

Thanks. Has secularism been utterly marginalized then apart from the left? (Who I’m guessing are utterly marginalized)

For me the left in Turkey was ended after the 1980 coup and the new constitution. The CHP was expelled from the European grouping of socialist parties in the 00s as it was too nationalistic.

Secularism hasn't been marginalised but has been overtaken by an efficient political machine preaching religion and consumer capitalism. Many secularists followed Kemalism down the road to oblivion and extinction in the belief that they were protecting their secular republic, but by doing so the marginalised the poor, the rural population, the religious and the Kurds. Bar the latter this is still Erdoğan's base.

For me the only leftist grouping was the HDP under Selahatin Demirtaş who somehow managed to group together a huge coalition of anti Erdoğan parties and organisations, ranging from Kurds to LGBT groups. He represented a genuine threat to Erdoğan and his cronies and so was imprisoned under charges of terrorism. As an MP this couldn't have happened unless the constitution was changed, hence Devlet Bahçeli and the MHP getting on board and supporting the AKP.

Despite everything that the AKP have done the CHP have consistently polled about a quarter of the vote, they are the party of Atatürk and secularism but have been either unwilling or now unable to make any effective opposition to the AKP.

There is an anti-Erdogan alliance for the election which is great news, and there does seem to be a possibility that his constitutional changes will end up in his losing power (though it's early days and as any good dictator he will do what he needs to rig the vote). Anyway, yesterday he apparently said "I will go if the people say 'tamam'" (OK). Tamam is now the most trending word in all social media channels in Turkey possibly in history.

The anti Erdoğan alliance is full of right wing shitsters who allowed Erdoğan into power before with their right wing shite, if they'd included the HDP in this alliance they might have stood a chance but now they'll only get their deposits back.

Are the HDP allowed to stand? Are the Govt banning individual candidates or the like?

So this is Meral Akşener, the leader of Iyi Partisi, she was formerly in the MHP which is the fascist party that's still supporting Erdoğan but she split with them. She's nicknamed Asena, a she wolf, but in Turkey the Grey Wolves are a right wing paramilitary organisation responsible for thousands of deaths of Leftists and Alevis in the 1970s. She was also interior minister in the 1990s when the state security used to disappear thousands of people and pursued a scorched earth policy which left millions of Kurds homeless and emptied hundreds of villages resulting in the Kurds living inshanty towns on the edges of large cities.

And she's now the main challenger to Erdoğan, what a choice.

Currently all are standing with the AKP hoping they'll fall below the 10% needed to get into parliament.

I wish Abdullah Gül had been persuaded to stand, he might have made a difference but this alliance with do nothing.

Parliamentary and presidential elections are today and there's hope for those against Erdoğan.

Muharrem İnce has emerged as a contender.

I thought that long Elle George piece from the LRB on how we got here was full of helpful context.

Adil Seçim Platformu announced latest results of the presidential elections: Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has 43.51% and Muharrem İnce has 33.92% of the votes as of 19:45.
An independent view as opposed to the one of the state. They also say that the HDP are going to get over the 10% threshold. Positive news from Turkey for a change but it's really early.

This has been described as "the most reliable Count"

"State news agency AA reports Erdogan at 53% with more than 93% of ballot boxes counted. The latter figure has been dropping, but it is hard to see how AA would go under 50%."

Iirc it was only the UK and Ireland, in the EU, where Erdoğan doesn't get more than 50% , if they like him so much they should go back and live in the paradise that is Turkey. Shitbags.
