      Shocker

I wish it made a difference, whether in votes, public outrage, whatever...but it won't, will it?

Even if it means the end of the NRA, that just means a different organisation "National Hunters of America" or "The musketeers confederation" or some such, would just replace them, get all their members, all their financing from the industry and all their political clout.

So that's two gun-toting 15/16 year olds shooting children in this month. No need for gun control though. Thoughts and prayers.

I have thought California had strict gun laws?

Hahahahahaha! Very funny, TG. Have you bought into Republican messaging? California's gun laws are stricter than, say, Idaho's. That does not mean they are strict.

Ok, I should have qualified that comment with, "By American standards".
It was my understanding Californians would nip over to Nevada to get their guns.

You can still buy all manner of guns here. The US supreme court has guaranteed that states are unable to restrict ownership very much.

Also, the further you get out of the big cities, the more... er... relaxed the local authorities are on enforcement. In the white redneck jurisdictions with white redneck mayors and sheriffs, nobody's taking anybody's guns away.

Particularly if one is talking about so-called "private sales", whether at gun shows or otherwise.

Which of course doesn't mean that people don't go to Nevada (or Arizona, or Oregon) if they are in a hurry.

A friend of mine lives in California with two young kids similar age to mine. She says she loses a lot of friends because before she lets her kids go on a play date she asks awkward questions like "Are there any guns in the house?", "Are they locked in a safe?", "Who has the keys to that safe?". I'm really glad that that's not really a consideration when my kids go on playdates. Maybe it should be in some of the rural areas round here.

I'm sorry to hear that. It certainly isn't an unusual or forbidden question among the Bay Area parents we know.

Today is the NRA's 148th birthday.

That San Diego story has hardly filtered outside the county, and even though it's top billing on local news it's not treated as a massive thing. And that's part of the problem - a lot of gun deaths in the US are this kind of almost mundane murder-suicide with family, rather than the big dramatic public mass shooting that makes the news. And they just go under the radar so people don't see them as part of the bigger problem. It's why bans on bump-stocks and semi-automatic weapons might happen, but that will only reduce the numbers of gun deaths at the edges.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department confirmed that the .45-caliber pistol that Nathaniel Berhow used in the shooting at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, California, on his 16th birthday was made from a kit. He then shot himself and died a day later in the hospital.

Such firearms have no serial numbers, and by making the gun themselves, owners can legally bypass background checks and registration regulations. That’s why they are known as “ghost guns.”

Kits can be purchased online or at gun shows, as long as the frames are not fully functional. But users can easily and cheaply machine and assemble them.
