Former students wouldn't count, for me. If I were counting. But anyway, how horrible, poor kid. Poor kids, as it goes.

I would agree with all of that.

One of the reasons that is very difficult to have a meaningful conversation about gun violence in the US is that there is a very active effort on the part of anti-gun control forces to restrict both the collection of dissemination of data, which in turn has led to a number of different ad hoc research groups trying to fill the gap, each of which can use different definitions and rely on different sources

          Well done Canada.

This is really an unbelievable story. The more you read, the weirder it gets. The shooter was 51, but had a lifelong obsession with the RCMP. To the point where he collected uniforms, guns, and most importantly old police cars bought at auction. On the day of the shooting, he was driving a letter-perfect replica of an RCMP-spec Ford Taurus which he'd obviously put together in his garage. Most of the victims were pulled over by who they thought was an RCMP officer on patrol and then shot. Others were shot in their homes, and then the homes were torched.

This guy was affluent, with a small chain of denture clinics. But he was also apparently a heavy drinker and a bit....something. Distant. Odd. Not quite level. I'm sure we'll be finding out in the weeks to come that he'd applied to the RCMP and been rejected a few times over the years.

Let's hope Trudeau moves quickly on the gun thing.

                Two year implementation period

As if anyone needed further evidence of the differences between the US and Canada, this can be done without legislation

Not without some complaining though "The government is destroying an entire industry. 14,000 people will be be out of work!" Says Doug from Canmore.

Good for him. Immediate implementation, too, so the idiots can't go out and stockpile. The two year implementation is for existing owners to get rid of them.

So the US can invade Canada in May 2022 then?

The US will need to invade Canada to liberate Canada's citizens from the tyranny of their government.

                                        About time.

Though removing LaPierre and bankrupting the current organisation is not going to make the political and economic forces that have fueled their ascendancy disappear.

The second season of the podcast ‘Gangster Capitalism’ has lots of the basic details of how LaPierre has controlled the NRA and used the payroll to do so. It’s basically the same was the mob used to control the Teamsters. Or how the Clintonites controlled the Democrats.

It’s the “duck and cover“ of our age.

Yes, though duck and cover was never monetised to the tune of 3 billion USD

Probably not, but somebody got paid for all those filmstrips.

Perhaps schools could have electronic locks that shut everything down with one button.

My understanding is that the biggest threat to kids in a school - other than bullies and assorted accidents - is a parent trying to take one of their kids away from an estranged partner and that sort of thing.
