    What comic did you read?

When I was growing up in the 1970s, everyone had a subscription to a weekly comic. I read Buster and I never knew why. One of the main strips was Charlie Peace who was a tramp; I hated him and never read the strip. My brother read Dandy, friends read Whizzer & Chips, Victor, Shoot, TV-21, Beano and Cor. I liked all those more than Buster but I just got it and read (most of) it each week. I can only assume the choice was made for me at a very early age.

And, did anyone read those broadsheet comics, Topper and Beezer?

World of Wonder for me - "a British educational magazine for children" - learned loads from it over the years, but then I always was a boring little tit.

Delivered from the newsagents I had Beano (age 7-9, roughly), Battle (9-12) then 2000AD (12-15). I had Scoop for a while too, possibly alongside Battle.

2000AD had to compete for attention with the music mags; Smash Hits and Record Mirror initially. It bit the dust when I started having NME delivered.

Most of the other titles SWR mentioned I encountered through their annuals rather than as weekly reading. Always a popular present from aunts and uncles.

I think I am almost exactly the same as Benjm (Battle-Action, wasn't it?). Roy of the Rovers as well as Beano, I think. I did then go onto some Spiderman comics and, occasionally, Warrior, which, in turn led onto graphic novels like Watchmen, V For Vendetta and Akira.

Beano, then Avengers, Captain America, West Coast Avengers, Daredevil, 2000AD, Iron Man on occasion, X-Men (Genosha and Inferno - Madeline Pryor was smoking hot).

But not Spiderman, he was rubbish.

Was it called Buster in UK as well? The one with Super Mac, Roy of the... and the other?

              I subscribed to...

It came as a shock that he wore purple in some countries.

Brother and I got Tiger, Shoot and Look & Learn.

It was a real treat when they arrived, sent out to the Colonies by my aunt, to be enjoyed over tiffin on the verandah...

I think it was then; by the time one of my younger brothers was reading it, it had become Battle Action Force and its main purpose seemed to be as a marketing device for the Star Wars figure sized Action Man diffusion line.

I came from a big family, so I read everything from 'Commando' (which I think were the very small non-action figures which you could have WARS with, in various nationalities, except all the Germans would say were achtung, gott, himmel, and generally ouch), 'Jackie' (I had two sisters), Beano, Dandy, and everything really.

They were all a good bit older than me, so the only thing I remember ordering (from day 1, please note) was Roy of The Rovers. And Smash Hits. Which should be classified as a comic. (It was really good, in a Shoot! type fanzine-y pop-crap, way. With LYRICS... Including, my favourite 'Return of the Los Palmas 7' by Madness.)

My favourite was the Wall Street Journal. And that was only a semi-lie.

Huge deluge. I remember going to watch the first Spiderman film in about '74?

I read 'Jag', which morphed with 'Tiger', which itself joined with 'Scorcher', which had previously incorporated 'Score'.

                              What comic did you read?

I never had a subscription to any one comic, but always got one every week from the newsagents when my dad went to pay the papers. I think I generally went with whatever had the best free gift. I must have had them all, because I immediately knew what each spoof in Viz was based on and it turns out they came from all kinds of comics, not just the Beano and Dandy.

It did feel a bit special when you got a broadsheet, though. The Beezer used to be one, but I think it downsized at some point.

After that, I graduated to Action, then Shoot, then the NME, then When Saturday Comes. You never get out of the habit.

My Dad had a load of old dandy, and desperate dan annuals, and several cowboy comics like Roy Rodgers, along with and eagle from the 40's and captain Marvel, who was nothing at all like superman, Oh No. Shazam indeed. So it was the Beano and the Dandy for me from a young age. Then later battle-action force, a load of old commando comics, and then shoot, which was like the king james bible compared to what it has become. The issue from just before Euro 88 with lots of interviews with the english team is probably the funniest thing I own.

Oh and all the asterix comics, which took ages to collect. I had a tintin comic, one about submarine sharks and a flooded city, but It really couldn't compete. I felt tintin could have done with more drinking, eating, partying, fighting, subverted authority figures, reluctant soldiers, spoofs, horrendous puns and you know, humour.

Yeah, Spiderman was good, Superman's the crap one. Among the most overrated comic's ever.

Never heard of those, although my sister has every 'book' (hardback, in English, and a few in multiple languages) in her toilet.

I read all of Tintin when I first got my library cards. Them and Asterix, beat the shit out of Anime. Apart from the teensiest touch of racism...

                                          I never had comics.
I had to re-read 2 "The Broons" annuals that were in the house. (1978 and the '79 Oor Wullie, I think. F knows why we had them.) I used to cast envious eyes at my friends' copies of 2000AD and Commando.

I did later buy Smash Hits with my pocket money, before moving on to The Maker.

Roy of the Rovers, around the time of the infamous "Basran Hostage Crisis/Suicide Bombing" storyline.

Never regularly anything, but the occasional Beano, Dandy and sometimes old annuals of other things like, perhaps, the Beezer.

The weird thing was that I really didn't understand half the premises of half the strips. I think I was thoroughly isolated so I didn't get the conflict between posh and oiks in the Bash Street Kids. And I had no idea who Jocks or Geordies were in the Jocks vs Geordies, but I was baffled why they all looked like Rod Stewart when he was doing keepy-uppies before cup finals.

What was the one with the Numbskulls? That was mine. I liked little people inside my head more than superheroes or WW2. Write that down, doctor.

My sister subscribed to Bunty. She got undressed on the back page (Bunty, not my sister). That was pre-pubescent porn.
